(which i'm not sure anyone was), at a party saturday night in between riotous outbursts of conversation i managed to catch bits & pieces of the new dvd of tim burton's latest, big fish, which was filmed right here in river city. anyway, as i'd speculated, my garage is clearly visible in the football field scenes, which were staged on the junior high field (where i play softball, after a fashion, every sunday afternoon) that borders my back yard. had i been paying attention that morning, i would've stood out back & held up a sign saying "154" or "106 beats that" or "12xu" or something of the sort. from what i could tell, the movie looks pretty decent. maybe sort of like o brother where art thou through the prism of fairy tales, as opposed to the odyssey. also, alison lohman is preternaturally luminous in her role. i see that her birthday is one day after mine ... well, ok -- 1 day & 20 years. *sigh* not that i would kick ms bonham-carter to the curb, either ... dan ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 May 2004 10:53:26 +0100 From: "Keith Astbury" Subject: [idealcopy] Lali Puna You know when you hear something that good that you want to shout from the treetops? Well this is my huge oak and I'm sitting on that shaky top branch, just so I can holler the following... "Lali Puna's new album is fucking brilliant!!" I'd go as far as saying that Faking The Books is my fave album since Neon Golden by the Notwist (with whom they're connected, of course). If you like The Notwist - or Stereolab or Broadcast's HaHa Sound for that matter - you will love this album. It's much more 'up' than Neon Golden (with the odd Neu-like beat), but it's absolutely choc full of gorgeous melodies and lovely arrangements, managing to sound both electronic and organic (and orgasmic?) at the same time. And all topped with breathy seductive girl vocals. Pop as it should be. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 May 2004 11:14:00 +0100 From: Andrew Walkingshaw Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Lali Puna On Mon, May 03, 2004 at 10:53:26AM +0100, Keith Astbury wrote: > You know when you hear something that good that you want to shout from the > treetops? > > Well this is my huge oak and I'm sitting on that shaky top branch, just so I > can holler the following... > > "Lali Puna's new album is fucking brilliant!!" > Seconded. It was with fairly low expectations, then, that I went to see M.E. & Co. Friday evening at 'Trees' in Dallas. First time seeing them, with a relatively limited knowledge of the catalogue (I've got Witch Trials, Dragnet, The A-Sides, The Unutterable, and Real New Fall LP), and...I've gotta say, it was the BEST show I've seen since last year's Stooges Coachella show. Band was tight as a tin drum, every track was killer (favourite being a huge-doomy-guitar version of 'Dr. Bucks' Letter), Smith was like a professor as played by Klaus Kinski (looks a bit like HIM too, by the way...), barking out the incomprehensibles with vigor. About 85 minutes total, with 2 encores, all to an unwhelming but enthusiastic half-capacity club (200 attended, max). I'm not one that automatically loves every show I go to (one of my pet peeves, actually), but this was highly memorable. I've heard the myth/cliche of "You either get a horrible Fall show or a great Fall show", and I'll concur with at least half of that statement. Just in case anyone was thinking of permanently throwing them on the fire...they're not dead yet.
