Sonic Youth: "Unmade Bed" Having spent their 23-year career swerving from blissful heights to = catastrophic lows, Sonic Youth have earned a reputation as an = uncontrolled rollercoaster encompassing everything from genre-defining = indie rock to the most outlandish avant-garde experimentation. Two years = after 2000's horribly bungled NYC Ghosts & Flowers, a slope so dramatic = that many fans feared they might never regain footing, they hit back = with Murray Street, a stunning return to form-- even the buzzkilling Kim = Gordon tracks never shot to the abysmal depths of "Boys go to Jupiter = get more stupider/ Girls go to Mars become rock stars."=20 But while our intern's charts and graphs documenting the quality of = Sonic Youth's recorded output indicate that the band is in for another = fall with their forthcoming album Nurse, "Unmade Bed", an early leaked = track from the record, unbelievably suggests that the band stands to = follow Murray Street with a record just as strong. Driven by meditative = guitar tones, a walking drumbeat, and Thurston Moore's hushed vocals, = the track recalls And Then Nothing-era Yo La Tengo as much as the Sonic = Youth of the past.=20 "Unmade Bed" throws back to Sonic Youth's late-80s alternative = atmospherics, retaining all the euphoric, understated tunefulness of = their best work. Not many rock bands manage to parallel the heights of = their back catalog this far into their career-- and obviously, their = chances of creating another landmark track on par with "Teenage Riot" is = slim-to-none. But "Tom Violence"? Maybe. May they still be as strikingly = melodic in 2027. The angular minimalism of their sound, the abstract, deadpan lyrics and a penchant for confrontation betrayed the art school origins and made Wire an idiosyncratic triumph. With bravery, integrity, absolute courage and energy -- and more ideas and concepts than any other musician of his era -- Gilbert continues to forge ahead. In his post-Wire work, he has utilized a variety of modernist tools and explored a vast range of experimental music, from electronic noise to ambient drones. Ordier (recorded for Table of the Elements in 1996 but subsequently believed lost) is another combative classic, as Gilbert stirs up a wild swarm of electronics with his usual deft touch. As Gilbert writes: "I'm taking a very, very minimalist approach and really getting inside some of the sounds and chasing them to destruction. That's the biggest change that has happened since punk; the apparatus to manipulate noises are available to everyone for a few pounds. But human beings are naturally curious. Give them machines and they'll pull them apart and abuse them for their own ends." Beautifully packaged in a custom-designed wood case. on previous releases: "A forceful piece of work which sounds like nothing else around. Conducted in a register of baleful menace, it combines rawness and sophistication in unfamiliar ways." --THE WIRE "Genius enacted with off-hand majesty." --MELODY MAKER Visit eBay, The World's Online Marketplace TM at http://www.ebay.co.uk ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 1 May 2004 20:46:02 +0100 From: "Ian B" Subject: Re: [idealcopy] triptych - edinburgh report - ----- Original Message ----- From: Keith Astbury To: > Ian B said... > >the fact that it was the same old Wire set softens the blow. > >Maybe they've run out of ideas. > Keith A said > Not the least bit worried about that I have to say. so Ian B went on to say No, I'm being a bit sulky really (Leeds Utd fan y'see). The nearest comparison was the Barbican show, which for all its (chapman/devlin fuelled) artistic weight and sense of occasion, didn't compare to seeing Wire from a hot, sweaty dancefloor. Was it Aberdeen where they played twice? Did anyone see both sets? Were they identical? This perhaps wraps up this phase of Wire? N.P. Fennesz - Venice. Its beautiful, if not the revelation that 'Endless Summer' was. Its simply an excellent record by the only person who comes close to Kevin Shields when it comes to manipulating guitar noise. > ----- Original Message -- > so Ian B went on to say > No, I'm being a bit sulky really (Leeds Utd fan y'see). > But they've been doing the same set for two years or so now, and are talking > about reworking Manscape.
