The trimmed version of "Templates" on the first Swim compilation was enough to prompt me to investigate further, so I'm thoroughly grateful to it for that. It's just that it feels much more like a proper, straightforward-ish rock song - albeit a tremendous proper, straightforward-ish rock song - rather than the mesmerising hybrid that they've created elsewhere. "Deckwork", for example, seems like a more balanced, perfect application of the same theory to me, and is something that I could happily put on repeat play for hours.... As for trying to sum them up for PJK...well, imagine that your favourite rock band got a bit bored in the studio one day and started sampling its own riffs, beats and basslines, looping them to create massive, shifting, awkward grooves that go absolutely nowhere, gloriously. And then they augmented them with electronics, using bleeps and buzzes and throbs to accentuate and deepen the whole effect. In the same way, imagine that your favourite rock band got fed up with being so damn literal and became addicted to the wonderful abstraction of dance music, the way that a structure can just exist for its own sake, the way that a track doesn't need to be weighed down by confession or catharsis. And finally, imagine that they did all of that without forgetting or neglecting the fundamentals, thus creating theoretical, ground-breaking music that still rocks and grooves like an absolute bastard. Imagine it, call it "Silo", go buy their records from posteverything.com.... Last album and dates... Good - about bloody time. That pair haven't done anything worthwhile since the (IMO) wonderful In Sides/The Box. The Middle of Nowhere was pretty mediocre, mostly retreading old ground, and The Altogether was abysmal - - one of the worst albums I have ever bought (cleverly purchased prior to hearing any of it). Here's hoping the final fling at least manages to capture some of the band's former glory. Craig ===== - ------- Craig Grannell / Wireviews --- http://www.wireviews.com News, reviews and dugga. Thought the name was Sam Beam, but in any case, Iron & Wine are a solid indie-folk act, one of the many totally un-grunge signings Sub Pop have picked up in the past few years. I have no objection to I&W, just not much good to say for them either. A friend of mine loves them... I'd rather hear labelmates Hot Hot Heat or Postal Service. a ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Apr 2004 19:17:54 +0100 From: "Keith Astbury" Subject: Re: [idealcopy] The 21st Century MC5 > Keith, > >>Egad! As for brother Ian? Well we had some good times as kids - you can guess which of us was the cowboy and which was the 'indian' - but we don't have a lot to do with each other now. I can forgive a lot of things - the not phoning, the forgotten birthdays, and even those silly trousers - but lyrics like "Peace is a dirty word, She used to be a painted bird yeah, War she's a whore, You know we love her more and more" was - and it hurts to say this - the final straw. Silo are a fabulous band, and one of rocks best kept secrets. They really should play live more often and release more records. I'd also say, they picked up that musical thread that Seefeel/Disco Inferno/Bark Psychosis et al had started back in the mid 90s..before Oasis/Britpop came along and it was all forgotten....in short.....they sound like Ocean Colour Scene never happened. > As for trying to sum them up for PJK...well, imagine that your favourite > rock band got a bit bored in the studio one day and started sampling its > own riffs, beats and basslines, looping them to create massive, shifting, > awkward grooves that go absolutely nowhere, gloriously.
