Look out Derek ; ) ///// Oo-er..d'ya think he means me? ;-) ////// Derek, (off in search of kevlar boxers...) ////// To clarify: it's not so much that I actively *dislike* the tinkly piano solo, as much as I believe it's superfluous. One of the things that I most admire about Wire's stuff is the economy of it all, with no unnecessary 'flab', and perhaps the O.M. piano break falls into that category. I also think it's relevant *which* version you're most familiar with:- for me, I'd known and owned "Chairs Missing" for about three years before I ever heard the single version, so the piano break came as a bit of a surprise. And how often is the single version of *anything* longer than the album version? Yahoo! I'd not heard this three piece before, but it seems - from the flyers - that they're big faves of Mark & Lard and the NME. They were great - there's something really bonkers about their sound - one track sounded like Bogshed covering Norwegian Wood and the last one was like The Monkees with a Container Drivers bass-line! Not sure they're going to sound so good on record, but live, with their deliciously ironic asides and sheer dedication (the guitarist ended one song with THREE strings missing!), they were just the trick - especially after the (admittedly tight) local band that kept bringing one sentence to mind. "Just what the world needs - a Wrexham band that sounds like a cross between Lenny Kravitz and the RHCP!". There's a possibility they might play Glastonbury and good luck to them and all that, because if you like that sort of thing they were pretty good (it's the Libran in me, folks!), but Christ, they'd wore me down. I was still grinning when The Futureheads came on. I wasn't exactly blown away by last years 1-2-3-Nul ep - it was just a tad too polite - and so hadn't bothered with it's follow-up. Live, however, they're a different proposition. On-stage their angular guitar sounds are much harder and harsher, and their four part harmonies are pretty mental. They've been compared with Wire and XTC, and whilst there is a definitely *some* Wire influence (I could imagine them doing a fantastic speeded up I Am The Fly!), I'd say they were definitely more like an early version of the latter, but with Gang of Four guitars. A less obvious influence could well be The Jam - some of those harmonies reminded me of the way that Weller & Foxton's vocals used to merge together - though this could just be one of life's weird coincidences. Whatever, I think it's fair to say that The Futureheads days of going straight in at number one is some way off yet! As the for the material - weel, perhaps it's hardly surprising that the highlights were the tracks I knew best - Carnival Kids and A Picture of Dorian Gray (the two best tracks off 1-2-3-Nul), and an absolute lunatic version of Kate Bush's Hounds of Love with almost laugh-out-loud "oh-oh-oh-oh's". An unlikely choice admittedly, but talk about taking a song and making it your own - it was the best cover version I've heard in ages! Although it was a poorly attended gig, the Futureheads came back for a fiery encore - mainly at the instigation of the three members of Mower, who - along with another half a dozen or so of us - had cheered accordingly. Indeed, both bands appear to have a mutual love - it was certainly refreshing to see both bands stand in the front with the punters and cheer the other on! Album out in June. Might well be worth a punt... Keith PS They were giving away some Futureheads badges and I picked up a couple of spares. Mail me off-list if anyone wants one. "Where was the melody?" he asked incredulously at the end of the performance.... anyhoo, i give it a thumbs up. when we were discussing modern classical stuff here a few weeks back somebody said that Messien is an influence on Radiohead. i didn't quite hear that, but there was a spot in the ... i think 3rd movement (i lost track) where it had quieted down to just prushed snare, bassoon, and piano, and in all honesty it really really reminded me of some of Talk Talk's _Laughing Stock_ album (a personal favorite). really beautiful. so... thanks to whoever first mentioned that here. and Dan -- have fun tonight! go early in fact. supposed there was a Gamelan performance at 7 before the show, but i missed it.... oh, one final note. i had no idea how to pronounce the title of the piece before the show. but there was a little video interview with the conductor and the pianist, and they pronounced it exactly like the name of the one-eyed mutant on Matt Groenig's show _Futurama_. that Matt Groenig is so damned cool... PJK please don't hate me because i can't type..... - --- All the cool kids are doing it: HTTP://www.EvilSponge.org ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Apr 2004 10:35:07 +0100 From: "Keith Knight" Subject: RE: [idealcopy] OT: Pixies Thanks for the heads-up Mark - I have ordered Boise Idaho and will swap away if I have the technology. I may not have a ticket to see them live but I can enjoy the vicarious thrill. The set-list from the first gig in Minneapolis is predictably mouthwatering: 'Bone Machine' 'Wave Of Mutilation' 'U-Mass' 'Levitate Me' 'Broken Face' 'Monkey Gone To Heaven' 'The Holiday Song' 'Winterlong' 'Nimrod's Son' 'La La Love You' 'Ed Is Dead' 'Here Comes Your Man' 'Vamos' 'Debaser' 'Dead' '#13 Baby' 'Tame' 'Gigantic' 'Gouge Away' 'Caribou' 'Isla de Encanta' 'Velouria' 'Wave Of Mutilation (Surf)' 'Where Is My Mind?' 'Into The White' Although I would like to have seen Bird Dream of Olympus Mons in there. Perhaps they will have re-learned that one by the time they get to Boise. Any reports from the Swim night last night? I couldn't make it as it frustratingly coincided with my son's birthday.
