So any of you going to Glasgow or Aberdeen hoping to see them will be disappointed unfortunately. It's still Herman that I'm objecting to rather than Jim Jones (who I also saw with Ubu). I saw him live in the 70s with the full band and he didn't sound then like he does now. I'm probably overreacting to how bad he was but he definitely spoilt the sound balance of what is one of my favourite live acts. He's a much more conventional rock guitarist (although I only know him from Ubu) but then that's how the band were at that point. Herman did return to Ubu for the last two albums (which to fans of the older versions of the band meant a return to their natural territory )and is the live guitarist as Jones does not tour due to serious illness. I recall him grinning continually during one of the post-reformation gigs. He also didn't seem to take some of Thomas' idiosyncrasies too seriously which may well not have endeared him to the Big Man ultimately (although I don't actually know anything really of internal Ubu politics). Another the Keith - -----Original Message----- From: MarkBursa@aol.com [mailto:MarkBursa@aol.com] >> It was certainly after all the others had left which did piss me off as I really liked Tony Maimone as a live performer << Agreed. The Heart of Darkness bassline is the root of Peter Hook's sound, for certain. Saw Maimone outside the context of Pere Ubu once, in Bob Mould's band (with Anton Fier on Drums). Astonishingly heavy, and a great cover of Neil Young's Cinnamon Girl. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 4 Apr 2004 23:53:43 +0100 From: "John Goddard" Subject: Re: [idealcopy] [OT]Tuxedomoon Are here more who like Tuxedomoon? As it's always been my favorite Wire LP (other than a shortlived pro-154 spell in the 80's), I thought it was about time. And it's been so great to hear it again - I hadn't played my vinyl copy for 3-4 yrs I guess. I still love the tracks that I probably liked best - Practice Makes Perfect (quite possibly my fave Wire track) and Mercy etc, but hearing some of the other tracks again was just as fruitful - I'd almost forgotten just how wonderful tracks like Marooned and Used To were. But the track I've been enjoying most this time round is - bizarrely?* - From The Nursery. So what do you reckon - is this because it's one of the CM tracks closest to Pink Flag and therefore closer linked to their current manifesto? Or is just because - with it's PF on steroids riff, great whoopy noises and Syd-like chorus - it's a bloody brilliant track!! Indeed, I've started to think that the closing triple whammy of FTN / Used To / Too Late is almost as great as the opening PMP / French Film Blurred / Another The Letter that's always been one of my favourite examples of track sequencing (it's Wire's very own Sgt Pepper / With a Little Help / Lucy... IMO!!) ever since I first heard those three on Peel when I was still in short trousers (OK, I was a late developer!) Getting CM on cd has also meant that I've finally got the former b-side / bonus track Former Airline, as this was one of the few (official) Wire tracks I didn't have. Although I couldn't say I knew it, it sounded vaguely familiar so I suspect I'd heard it many years ago. Still, it was an interesting to hear something - from way back when - by a band you love *that you didn't know*, other than dodgy live recordings or stuff they didn't think was good enough to release at the time - which, after all, is usually the way with these things! But as much as I like it, whether it was worth waiting more than 25 yrs for is perhaps another thing ; ) And as one of the resident pop pickers on this list, I have to mention the singles - I Am The Fly, an exponent of almost Madcap like silliness that my five year old has already taken to singing, and of course, Outdoor Miner where melody and arrangements collide to make one of the most gorgeous slices of pop perfection I've heard. And whoever said they disliked the clunky piano addition on the 7" version can go and spank themselves with dock leaves as far as I'm concerned. I love it! Still think Elvis Costello ripped it off, mind ; ) Keith * I say 'bizarrely' not because I ever thought there was anything wrong with it, just that it was noweher near being one of my favourites. np ronnie & clyde - in glorious black & blue ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 4 Apr 2004 21:02:13 EDT From: CHRISWIRE@aol.com Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Chairs Still Missing In a message dated 05/04/2004 00:20:41 GMT Daylight Time, keith.indoorminer@virgin.net writes: np ronnie & clyde - in glorious black & blue Excellent CD Keith NP Hotei - Electric Samurai ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 4 Apr 2004 21:28:04 EDT From: RLynn9@aol.com Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Chairs Still Missing In a message dated 4/4/04 6:20:41 PM Central Daylight Time, keith.indoorminer@virgin.net writes: > I've started to think that > the closing triple whammy of FTN / Used To / Too Late is almost as great as > the opening PMP / French Film Blurred / Another The Letter that's always > been > one of my favourite examples of track sequencing (it's Wire's very own Sgt > Pepper / With a Little Help / Lucy...
