There's an enormous difference between the Neu!-influenced Peng-era 'lab and the later versions, where many more influences were brought to bear (as Tim Gane's collection of easy-listening records expanded!) The point where it all comes together for me is the Mars Audiac Quintet/Emperor Tomato Ketchup period, but there's a lot of change since then. Currently they're quite poppy, oddly given the recent death of a member and the break-up of the relationship of the two founders.... They were on a Scottish [*] triple bill in Groningen I talked about earlier together with Aereogramme and (here he is again) Alasdair Roberts. I must say of the three I liked Aereogramme best. I would never buy Eastern Lane's album based on their gig. Their singer's hairdo left a bigger impression than their music did. At their age we all copied unto cassette and there is still a music industry. One difference though is that LP covers were as much a part of the experience as the record. I've gone over every inch of my old covers at one time or another. But I never feel any longing to even open the booklets of arty moody twaddle that falls out of CDs. The price now for CDs is set by CDWOW at about #9 new and #7 after about six months. The record industry through the legal book at CDWow when they cut the price to #7.00 and sadly won. ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V7 #105 *******************************
