Interesting how punk has dropped out of the running completely. Lots of post-punk and one proto-punk classic but none of the stuff itself. As someone who voted for The Ramones and The Clash I find this a little surprising. The other thing that surprises me is the love for Tago Mago, which I seem to recall was getting a number of mentions in the sub-ten lists too. I'm as much of a Can fan as the next person here but I've always regarded that album as slightly too loose and frankly uninvolving for greatness (I find myself drifting off while playing it) - I'm more of a Future Days / Peel sessions and Mooney era man myself. Nothing since Loveless either - probably a statement about our age range and the breakdown of consensus as much as the lack of good stuff. Given I voted for it too, I suppose Slanted and Enchanted would have been in had Bart listed - but that's still over a decade old. And, ooh, that Pixies vote was split! Three's no doubt that one can spot a Glass tune a mile off but he does ring the changes incredibly successfully within that template IMO. Akhenaten I love having seen it performed in the 80s at the English National Opera. He may be at his best live when one forces oneself to get into the rhythm. Or on screen where you don't have a choice. His work on The Hours most recently is really good. Einstein is also superb. Not sure if anyone's mentioned Michael Nyman yet. I prefer his earlier work for Peter Greenaway especially his soundtracks to The Falls and The Draughtsman's Contract. Or John Adams. Nixon in China is a superb work. Akhenaten I love having seen it performed in > the 80s at the English National Opera. Sitting through it had the reverse effect on me. I gave up totally after La Belle et Le Bete. He lost the essence of the film. The Beast had a voice of a wimp in his version. About as threatening as meeting Graham Norton in a chipshop. I'd forgotten about Adams: excellent work (at least the earlier stuff) and Nyman before The Piano. Love to see Nixon in China live but it seems never to happen. Suppose sticking on the Magic Flute again is a safer box office. BTW is there any connection between Wire and minimalist/modern composers? Brian Eno and John Cale both manage to inerconnect lots of bands/artists in rock/dance and 'modern classical' but Wire seem to be a bit out of this loop, although a lot of their work falls within it. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Mar 2004 19:21:34 +0100 (BST) From: =?iso-8859-1?q?Monochromatic=20Man?= Subject: Re: [idealcopy] new / crap bands (was shriekback...........) > I'm not sure I agree with this principle, though I > would gladly cough up to > keep certain bands OUT of the studio ; ) Sadly, a lot of these newer bands don't realise they could actually earn money merely working in a 7-11. wnd3 ___________________________________________________________ WIN FREE WORLDWIDE FLIGHTS - nominate a cafe in the Yahoo!
