Subject: The Bible Tells Me So On her radio show recently, Dr Laura Schlesinger said that, as an observant Orthodox Jew, homosexuality is an abomination according to Leviticus 18:22, and cannot be condoned under any circumstance. The following response is an open letter to Dr. Laura, which was posted on the Internet. It's funny, as well as informative: >>>Dear Dr. Laura: Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. ... End of debate. I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some other elements of God's Law and how to follow them. >>>1. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord - Lev.1:9. The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them? >>>2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her? >>>3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness - - Lev.15: 19-24. The problem is how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense. >>>4. Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians? >>>5. I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2. The passage clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself? >>>6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination - Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this? Are there 'degrees' of abomination? >>>7. Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here? >>>8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev.19:27. How should they die? 9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves? >>>10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? - Lev.24:10-16. Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev.20:14). I know you have studied these things extensively and thus enjoy considerable expertise in such matters, so I am confident you can help. I stopped laughing when found out that it was true. The whole story is here: www.snopes.com/politics/religion/drlaura.asp As for the self-loathing Americans on this list, I would hate to be held up to the values of my leaders and fellow Canadians from *our* bible belt, Alberta (don't get me going on the Conservative Alliance party). At least half of the people (or more) in the US voted for the Democrats. I heard a story a few weeks ago about the extreme amount of money conservatives and the religious right is investing in media outlets (primarily radio) in the US (I believe it was in the context of the launching of a new liberal radio station). That is a scary trend. The great thing about this development is that these people have handed the Civil Liberties Union and gay rights groups a golden gift in their ability to craft a good argument against Bush's proposed amendment. There now is no supposing what would happen if the rights of gay people were taken away in the American Constitution. The band got off to a somewhat slow start with a performance of "Fear Of Drowning" that, in my opinion, could have been more intense given the nature of the studio version. Right after that, though, the band broke into a full sprint with "Apologies To Insect Life" and they maintained that intensity through most of the rest of the show. Not bad at all. I was also quite taken with the second opening band, Kaito, who played a set of obtusely quirky songs that reminded me of The Slits or of some Kim Gordon-penned Sonic Youth songs. I have to say I'm not a massive fan (I'd go as far as to say they're overrated) but loved the gig - real high camp stuff. They played for a couple of hours, if you count the robots on stage for The Robots, and played basically a greatest hits set plus a fair chunk of the new album. It could have been dull were it not for the films on the screen behind them, full of grainy old black and white footage and animation. All very literal, so for Autobahn, you got promo-footage of the autobahn, for Trans Europe Express, you got footage of trains, for The Model, we got models etc. When there was no stock footage available the lyrics (such as they are) would appear on screen and always (note to Es Devlin) in perfect sync with the music. There was some doubt as to what actual contemporaneous input and influence the guys on stage actually had to the music, but the bum notes at the finale of (a thunderous) TEE kind of answered that one. The place was packed with what must have been Kraftwerk fanatics judging by the reception which greeted even the blinking red lights on the group's ties, but fair enough, many had waited years for this. You had to love the robots - they've even mirrored the hair loss. Quite an odd feeling though, watching 4 remote controlled mannequins move about a bit on stage whilst the crowd went wild and applauded furiously. Slightly spooky too, as whilst almost at rest, their heads turn ever so slightly to glance at each other. Well worth the trip! Her claims mirror the plot of 1999 hit movie The Sixth Sense in which young star Haley Joel Osment tells Bruce Willis: I see dead people. Lovers ... Michael and Kylie Kylie said: Ive had one particularly intense experience that let me know Michael was still around. Like he had come to say, Hello. Kylie dated Hutchence in 1987. Ten years later after falling for tragic TV host Paula Yates Hutchence was found dead in a Sydney hotel room. Kylie said she has a stronger bond with Hutch NOW than when he was alive. She added: Sometimes when people have passed you feel closer to them. The pop princess who had a hit with Step Back In Time also expressed opinions on the afterlife, reincarnation, evolution, death, heaven and God. She said: I believe I have lived before, but Im not very advanced in my series of lives. Im not even into double figures. I dont have a visual memory of my past lives, but I believe I came from somewhere. Kylie revealed her supernatural side in an amazing interview with American magazine Blender. She added: From experiences with the deceased and with the sixth sense there must be much more than the here-and-now. I believe in a universal power. I think were very early in the evolutionary scale. We dont use a fraction of our brains yet. To be honest, mine is on economy some days. The soul is the endlessness of our beings. The soul is infinite and were just passing through. Talking about heaven, she said: There has to be a peaceful place. I believe that people who have lived good lives will achieve peace.
