Though imo hardly "premier league" both Furs & Talkx3 are fine... But even more surprising than Nirvana's absence were (if I remember correctly) no mentions of Sonic Youth and REM. If contributed a top 20 list I would've added Dirty (or Sister) and Green for sure. No Cure or JD in my top 20 list, but Pixies, GBV, J&MC (just Psycho Candy), Beatles, Pavement, Tom Waits, Aphex Twin, Massive Attack, Clash and probably the odd Blur would be present. Probably no big surprises... Making a list without any Wire doesn't feel right though! I'm a longterm Wire fan from first hearing them on Peel in the glorious year of 1977. They stood out then as something different and beyond all the copycat Ramone and Clash bands. In Mike Thorne they had an effective 5th Beatle. I was a longterm fan of minimalism so the Punk sound struck a real chord. However Wire seemed almost uniquely the only band able to move on without compromising themselves in the process. Sadly only saw them the once at this time (I moved from the delights of Belfast in late 78) at the Janetta Cochrane theatre. Course they quickly broke up therafter!. I carried the torch and bought cassette copies of all the LPS and was overjoyed on the returning. My Favourite album is A Bell is a Cup. God knows why, but it remains a fav to this day. Saw them twice during this period. I remember looking at the audience (Mean Fiddler?) and realised I was a member of a Train spotting club. Seemed everyone was on their own sharing a secret vice that dare not speak its name. Remember seeing Robert Gotobed walking off stage and leaving the drum machine running..and therefore unsurprised he left. To me Robert is the soul of Wire and his marginalisation was a real error. Wir was a dead loss. One review of this period (manscape in Q?) struck me as precient. It said roughly that Wire had left the R&B roots of most rock music well behind. Effectively Wire were forging a new type of rock which My Bloody Valentine, Godspeed YBE seemed to develop further. Drill is a very hard listen however! The revival of interest in Wire during the Brit Pop years proved one thing: Wire were the genuine thing, a truly visionary band which wont date as long as rock survives. Curiously, I was explaining to a colleague how Moby had ripped the Wire sound off for Stargazer (I think) and was comparing it to Read and Burn.As I was using the computer, I thought it was continually playing Moby rather than Wire CD I'd placed in the machine. It took me a few minutes of disc switching before I realised how completely Moby had internalised Wire... As to the current revival...well with two young kids, going out to the pub is a struggle but I'd like to track them down this year. I'm not 100% sold on the current output but I still harbour a very sad dream that some week they are still going to appear on TOTP...:-) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Mar 2004 21:38:53 -0000 From: "Keith Knight" Subject: RE: [idealcopy] Ipod Used In Domestic Homicide Bart I think I speak for the native English speakers here when I say that I never notice that you're using a second language. Some words for John.. 11.03.04 Prior to leaving for London last Thursday, Siouxsie & I had been talking = about inviting John McGeoch to guest with us on stage. We hadn't spoken = in ages but we had a mutual acquaintance whom I was going to get in = touch with. I'd even had a daydream about us playing a version of 'The = Light Pours Out Of Me' or 'Shot By Both Sides', actually just thinking = of those guitar riffs brings a lump to my throat. It wasn't until we = arrived back home last night that we knew for sure that it would indeed = remain a dream. John was gone.=20 Without any disrespect to all the other guitarists we have worked with, = none had the relaxed mastery and such a depth of expression as John = McGeoch. No amount of scrutiny of filmed 'Live' performance tapes could = reveal the subtle economy of technique that made an apparently complex = phrase look so deceptively simple. Exasperated guitarists would often = comment, "But his hands don't even move!"=20 His signature style was what made the intros to songs like 'Spellbound' = and 'Happy House' so unique, the guitar break in 'Israel' swing & the = feedback in 'Night Shift' scream.=20 I remember in pre-show soundchecks John would move around the stage = locating the 'harmonic sweet spots' which he would employ like a = magician, literally conjuring sounds out of thin air. I also remember = him entertaining the road crew we shared with Motorhead with a manic = rendition of 'The Ace of Spades' or a note & tone perfect version of = Hendrix's 'Little Wing'.=20 On a recent trawl of the web looking for clues, I came across an = interview with the 'Chilli Pepper's' John Frusciante, who cited John as = one of the guitarists he'd studied religiously, I think 'The Edge' & = many other guitarists were listening too.=20 John was also an entertainer and a charming gentleman, his smile was = sincere and his voice which I can still hear, had a gentle Scottish lilt = which would make the adjective 'apparent', sound like the noun for a = mother or father.=20 Sometimes the mild mannered Scot from Greenock could get a bit = Glaswegian. When playing as 'Janet & the Icebergs' in 1980, John was = about to show some baiting idiot in the crowd a bit of Scottish = etiquette but not before first retiring stage left to change out of his = soft shoes. Much to our relief the coward made a hasty exit while John = put his boots on. Of course we teased him endlessly for being on stage = in his 'Slippers' in the first place!=20 It was nice to see John in a recent documentary, remember his time with = the band so fondly but also heartbreaking to hear him recount the events = leading up to his departure so acutely. We can all be grateful that he = agreed to add his part to the band's recent biography with the = intelligence and dignity that were always his most outstanding = characteristics.=20 I'm honoured to have shared some special moments with John McGeoch and I = will always love & remember him as a warm & caring friend.=20 Budgie, March 10th., 2004=20 ..to paraphrase Siouxsie from 2003's biography;=20 "My abiding memories of John are good ones.
