Elton John is being lined up to do a tribute set to Jobriath, the world's first openly gay pop star. Launched in 1973 by Elektra Records his career flopped and Jobriath died a recluse in the Chelsea Hotel ten years later. As gay pop culture has finally started to flourish commercially since Jobriath's death, we salute Morrissey and Elton for stopping to honour this tragic, unknown pioneer. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Mar 2004 12:35:22 +0000 From: "Derek White" Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Heavy Rotation/sleeves > >> Wire - Ideal Copy: this and "read and burn 2" are probably my most >played Wire > > disks...always loved the cover too... >My fave Wire sleeves: Chairs Missing, ABIAC & Manscape. Best sleeve award probably goes to "Chairs Missing" too, although "Pink Flag" runs it close: with the flag's iconic quality, it's easy to see why they'd choose this as their corporate logo, such as it is. Also, I think it's been mentioned here before, too, but I think that the little white border round these sleeves really sets them off. Ideal Copy's sleeve *is* pretty neat, too. Singles? I like to thank Phillip for keeping me company as I was there on my own, he was very informative. I am sure you all know Phillip is a wonderful person. I have to say we had a great time and we meet other fans as we waited outside for the band to leave. I believe there aren't too many Aussie fans here, if I can remember correctly there is another in Perth, are there anymore? Is this mainly a man's domain or are there female members as well? I have a few friends here from around the world. Hi Mark Bursa Mileta Eiliv ??? We all belong to the Comsat Angels 'Sleep No More' mail-list that I moderate and own. Mark amongst others said I would be a fool (well not in those exact words) to miss this show. After I heard a few seconds of 'Mr Marx's Table' I decided to get my ticket Saturday. I knew this would be a band I would definitely like if their music was anything like this song. I will be honest with you all and say that I honestly do not know the music of WIRE, so Phillip I guess I am one of the curious fans. I have a vinyl album called 'Turns and Strokes' that I bought for a friend for $50(yes Mark you have already mentioned that was excessive, so no need to rub it in again) who had it already so it's still in it's plastic wrap, I've had it for about 3-4 years actually. Anyway I bought 'Send' on the night and I have heard that many times since the Sunday. I knew I was in for a treat when Colin appeared on stage on his own and paced up and down the stage with lyrics in hand 99.9. I thought the show was incredible. I have been to many gigs in my life but none like this. Wire blew me away literally, like what was that. I could feel the music in my throat and I could feel the sound waves with my fingertips. The sound enveloped us and totally blew us away, well it did me. I don't want any trouble but I believe they are probably better live then on CD. the power the energy was incredible. I don't know how to really explain what I am trying to say. They are out of this world. One of the songs went for a long time and it makes me wonder are their any live CDs, have they thought about releasing a live CD of the most recent gigs I suggest they should because the sound was fantastic. I heard there are a few band members here, was that Graeme & Colin, thank you so much for signing my CD and going out of your way to meet the fans when I am sure you were just dying to go home. I felt as if I weren't worthy to have met you, but I will treasure such a memory. What now? Well I have a huge back catalogue to investigate. When I do, I will report my thoughts here. Many have recommended 154, what are your thoughts? Thanks to the band, Phillip and other Wire fans that made it a very memorable night I am so pleased I saw WIRE live. anastasia Melbourne australia ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Mar 2004 12:48:22 +0000 From: "Derek White" Subject: RE: [idealcopy] Tonight, Matthew... Shit. I can't slag the Comsats off anymore!! Seriously, welcome aboard Anastasia. Glad you liked Wire so much live. Sounds like you had a similar night to a few of us here at Brighton a year or so back when several people here were seen to spontaneously hug despite having only met a couple of hours before! I think most people here would agree that Turns & Strokes (an interesting if rough and ready artifact) isn't the ideal introduction to Wire, so maybe it's as well you kept it in the wrapper ; ) From reports it would seem that the long track live would be the current version of Pink Flag from the positively ancient album of the same name. As for where to start with their back catalogue, *most* (though certainly not all) of us would say either Chairs Missing or 154, though they're both very different to Send. Both essential IMO. Colin Newman - Bastard OK, I could probably do without some of the more d&b moments, but I like this LP a lot. There's some great instrumentals here. I'm particularly keen on Spaced In at the moment, with it's lovely chiming guitars, and the closing track Turn just seems to get better with age. ))) Oh no no no !!! Very poor album. Could never get into it. A-Z & Not To by far and away Colin's finest hour(s). Esp. the post 154 songs such as Lorries, We Meet Under Tables, 5/10 etc. On A-Z I particularly love Life On Deck, esp. when Colin screams, ".. becoming sprightly by degrrrreeees.." Hox - It-ness I think this may well be my fave Graham LP now. It's a bit of an unsung (away from these quarters at least) classic imo. I love the shole album, but my fave tracks at the mo are probably the rhythmically wobbly Extra Zero and How High Is Is - a great track in the Pump tradition (well I think so!) that I've played loads in recent months. ))) Mmm. Not bad. Catch Supposes way better I think, and definitely my top Graham LP (though not strictly solo EGL). Actually no. pre>HE is DEFINITELY my favourite Graham LP(though not strictly an LP, more a collection of bits and bobs). A perfect collision of raw technology and fresh ideas simply executed. The strength of Catch Supposes for me is in it's elegant understatement. Graham's restrained/laid back vocal style fits perfectly. Wire - Ideal Copy As much as I love this album it's the Snakedrill bonus track A Serious of Snakes with it's poptastic "you pea-brained earwig" chorus that I'm particulalrly loving at the moment. I especially love the bit at when 2 min 04 secs when the high synth in comes in, and completely alters the mood of the song. Magic. ))) I still think Snakedrill is an absolutley towering achievement, the heights of which they never quite managed to scale again during that period. It's been a long while since I posted something now I would like to know if some of you have experience in remastering casette tapes or lps and what tips and tricks you can provide me with. - - The first step is to get this stuff digitalized on my PC, which is not that difficult. - - Then comes the more problematic part: cleaning up the stuff (removing noise, clicks, etc) Which software do you use for that? - - As a last step (if I didn't miss anything) the burning of the cleaned up stuff on CD. Trouble with the ACR reissues is they're too similar to the Creation ones (which are still available cheap from Action Records,m or they were a few months ago). ACR themselves are to blame for this - they don't want to add extra tracks/outtakes/sessions etc. And they want to align themselves with "classic soul/jazz/funk" rather than Factory/post-punk. Which is why the reissues aren't on LTM, where they ought to be. He claims to have one, but as part of his personal collection. It could be a rejected artwork concpet, and I know these thigs exist because I have one. Its a printer's proof of an alternative cover of Idealcopy (printed on card, but not folded or glued - same image but different surround & typography). I come at this as someone who has never even used a Walkman or any other mobile listening device - something to do with needing to hear the noise of my surroundings. But the implications about the iPod is that it revolutionises the way one listens to music. Is this the case? Is it worth the cost? Would you recommend it? There have been female members here in the past but they have been few and have rarely posted for some reason. Really enjoyed your post. As for recommendations, you'll find that some here prefer Wire Mark 1, some prefer Wire Mark 2 and virtually everyone really likes Wire Mark 3. As a Wire Mark 1 guy (mainly because I was around at the time), Pink Flag, 154 and Chairs Missing are essential. My favourite Mark 2 album is The Ideal Copy, and you get the Snakedrill e.p. too, which I concur with Fergus is the apex of Mark 2. And although you've got Send, I still think you need both Read and Burns because the recording is less fuzzy and because there are songs not included on Send that you need. Unless there are female members that just 'lurk' , rather than post here, then I *think' you may be the first***. However, I'm pretty sure that it's more by accident than design. Enjoy, Derek W (***Unless any of you guys out there are contemplating goin' for the old 'cut'n'paste' on the quiet, if you catch my drift? ;-) ) _________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Mar 2004 11:34:08 -0800 From: Paul Pietromonaco Subject: RE: [idealcopy] Tonight, Matthew... Yeah - but one of the versions - "Hello, I Love You (slight return)" is only 10 seconds long. The remastering job on those 'beach' b-sides is fantastic, and the stuff from the KMKMKM era was in dire need as well. The unreleased version of 'hello, I love you' is much more Cure-like, in my humble opinion. Also, a different take on their cover of 'purple haze' is almost note-to-note with the original and quite superior to the somewhat dodgy rendition on that Hendrix tribute. > I was thinking of investing in the recent box set... > just to get all those b-sides from the cassette > version of "standing on a beach" again, ...but > the rest of it looks pretty bad.. > 3 versions of "hello, i love you".. no thanks.... ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Mar 2004 14:42:37 -0600 From: "dan bailey" Subject: Re: [idealcopy] top ten albums by odd coincidence, i did this mentally last night while listening to, yes, the cure's pornography. at the moment, mine (always subject to change at the drop of a tone arm) goes something like this -- joy division -- unknown pleasures cure -- pornography rudimentary peni -- death church pulp -- different class bob dylan -- highway 61 revisited t rex -- electric warrior mekons -- curse of chumbawamba -- shhh killing joke -- what's this for fall -- live at the witch trials dan >has this been done before? >maybe...but I'm a sucker for lists, and I'd love to compile a list of the >top ten non-wire related albums as voted by members of the list..no >compilations, doesn't have to be in order...one album...one point.. > >I'll start.. > >Can "Tago Mago" > >Gang of Four "Entertainment!" > >Faust "Tapes" > >The Cure "Seventeen Seconds" > >Kraftwerk "Man Machine" > >New Order "Lowlife" > >Joy Division "Closer" > >Pink Floyd "Piper at the Gates of Dawn" > >Public Enemy "It takes a Nation of Millions..." > >Autechre "Tri Repetae" > >I guess that's it.... > >Kenny > >np.
