["kenny sanderson" Subject: [idealcopy] Wire Brisbane photos. G'day all I have put some photos of the Brisbane gig at the Zoo on my (crappy) personal website. Sorry about the amateur hour of the site, but I'm still a beginner. Go to: http://members.optusnet.com.au/~pdblakeney/index.html and open the 'gallery'. I've only just got back to Sydney from Brisbane so haven't had much chance to expand here on the show. As I said in my last post I went 'back-stage' and met the lads, and I was rather amazed that Colin knew my name (I'm not sure whether that's from reading all our bollocks here on IC or just from addressing parcels for Swim orders). Anyway the band was very friendly. Phillip - --------------------------------- Find local movie times and trailers on Yahoo! Sorry to bring this to the list, but I think this is where people are interested :-) Anyways, I found a spare copy of the magazine Merge issue 2 fall 98 with the bonus CD. These are roughly cotemporary records... OM entered the charts on 29/1/79 and OA entered on 10/2/79. They'd have been recorded around the same time and it's highly unlikley either band (or producer) would have heard the other until it was released. The OM piano bit was added by Mike Thorne to make the song long enough to be a single! The OA intro is definitely copped from Abba. Elv has admitted the steal. They've certainly got some good influences and AT Keith's mates might be interested in the thoughtful, ahem, 'dating' assistance!! (PS thanx for the photies, Phillip. Good stuff) If anyone is anywhere near Highbury and Islington next Tuesday (March 9th) and is stuck for something to do, me band, Fly Agaric, are playing Upstairs at the Garage (onstage 10pm, #3.50 with flyer). For a description of the band's sound, I'll hand you over to my supremely eloquent co-vocalist James. "Fly Agaric - mutant punky hypno-grunge, not indie rock, not the Darkness, not the Vines or Muse, not Franz Ferdinand. More Wire, Pixies, Rocket From The Tombs. Liars molested by Black Sabbath. Mercury Rev with a twist of Queen Adreena. 60s psychedelia with a flicknife. We'd love it if you came ... but a gentle applause would be ok too ... If you're just chatting someone up in a pub we've even left space on our flyer for the lucky bugger's phone number ... Meet them at the gig and shag their brains out afterwards ... go on you deserve it ... treat yourself ... we'd like that." At the risk of sounding like I'm blowing my own trumpet (ooer), I think I can say without fear of being boastful that it'll be better than staying in and watching "Celebrity Fit Club". ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Mar 2004 17:28:57 -0000 From: "Keith Astbury" Subject: [idealcopy] Fw: Which punk rock god are you - Quizilla I was Joey Ramone... The OM piano bit was added by Mike Thorne to make the song >long enough to be a single! > As a rule, I thought Mike Thorne gave the band sympathetic production, and allowed their material to stand in an appropriate sonic setting. But as for the Outdoor Miner tinkly 'Piano' solo in the middle 8, *I* wish he hadn't bothered. I prefer it without the unnecessary bell (sans whistle) It's a slightly chimey, out-of-tune piano, too, if such it is. Sounds like an upright they'd wheeled out of the local pub, where it'd stood neglected for 50 years, since it was last tuned....... ;-) Anyhow, what does the album version weigh in at? 2 mins 38 secs, IIRC? Who sez a single has to be three mins long anyhow? The band also played two gigs in Japan the previous week, with good reports filtering through. Wire are relative unknowns in Australia, and the build-up to the show was quite minimalist, with a few posters, some street press ads, and a little radio coverage on the local community radio station 4ZZZ. In the end a small but enthusiastic crowd of around 200 turned up at the venue. The Zoo is a rather nondescript upstairs room with only a single door at street level: its a couple of doors up from a strip joint in a fairly seedy part of town. A bar at one end, a couple of pool tables, a few tables and chairs and some 44 gallon drums with stools face a small waist-high stage. A nice relaxed, low key atmosphere to savour the debut of the English shouty-blokes on Aussie soil. The crowd was a surprisingly mixed bunch, plenty of old geezers, but also many younger people. Support acts were Bit By Bats a young Brisbane based three piece who played straight ahead rock music, and Front End Loader, one of those almost made it bands who are probably perennial supports who play a good time rock style with a bit of a sense of humour. The buzz before Wire came on was perhaps a little subdued (Wire being Wire if you havent kept up with current events, you might be a little uncertain as to what you would get - (the road ahead is quite uncertain.). The backing tape to 99.9 started to rise, and AT LAST they were hereColin first stalking the stage to sing the first verse, followed progressively by the others. The set list was the same as Kenny identified in Japan: 1 99.9, 2 Germship, 3 Mr..Marx's Table, 4 1st Fast, 5 Read and Burn, 6 The Agfers of Kodack, 7 Comet, 8 In The Art of Stopping, 9 Spent, 10 I Don't Understand, ENCORE 1 Strange, 2 106 Beats That, 3 Surgeon's Girl, ENCORE 1 Lowdown, 2 Pink Flag. No surprises really, no new songs, and the versions were similar to those on the Metro freebie with given away with Send. The great swirling 9 minute version of Pink Flag was a highlight to end the show. The boys were in great form, and appeared to be enjoying themselves (except for Bruce who studiously beavered away at the side with his back half turned, but he was probably smiling inwardly). Robert metronomed away perfectly. Colin grooved away like a demented Mr Bean (NO offence intended), and EG Lewis powered along the songs with great style. Lighting was minimalist but clear enough for me to get some nice close-ups. Go to my (barebones) web page : http://members.optusnet.com.au/~pdblakeney/index.html for some shots (in the gallery). The crowd was enthusiastic but well behaved- no pogoing or similar carry on, and surprisingly no 1,2,XU requests that I could hear. I grabbed a set list, and also picked up cue sheets that Colin had taped to the floor with the words to Spent and I Dont Understand. Overall, it was a great experience and the boys put on a tremendous show. I reckon its a bit short- come all the way round the world and play for only one hour- but Im very happy nonetheless. I will be at the Sydney show tomorrow night and Melbourne on Sunday, so there is still more to come!!
