Anyway a pretty wonderful evening with Brian Wilson last night. My knowledge of the Beach Boys back-catalogue is somewhat sketchy outside of the singles and Pet Sounds and I can't say I've been obsessed about every nuance of what should have been on Smile for the last 38 years. But 'God Only Knows' is probably my favourite single if pushed (when I'm not hearing 'Roadrunner' 'Complete Control' or 'Wichita Lineman' at least) and I love 'Good Vibrations' to bits so I decided this was probably worth a punt despite the price, especially given the rave reviews for the Pet Sounds tour from Mr Astbury among others. As I said I'm stuck towards the back of the RFH in the balcony, so a long way from the stage. Fortunately my long-sight is still good. The gig started with mutters behind the stage curtain, which drops to reveal Brian closely surrounded by a large group of musicians - The Wondermints, his superb backing band these days. They do half a dozen acoustic numbers many of which I don't recognize, presumably early works - - but the sound and harmonies are just incredible. 'Surfer Girl' sounds especially great. Brian is dressed in black and moves his arms around when animated. He's obviously not entirely well but he seems to be enjoying himself. There is some pretty painful scripted banter between the band members at this point - I wonder if Brian needs this fake bonhomie to ease himself into the gig? The band then spilt across the stage and are joined by the Stockholm string section - there's now about 18 players. They run through a section of BB hits - God Only Knows and California Girls stand out - and a couple of new songs. Brian's voice is not a thing of beauty these days but can just about cope - and surrounded by the Wondermints it doesn't matter anyway as they can sing anywhichway you like. After the break it's straight into Smile, without introduction. It starts with 'Heroes and Villains', a song I've often considered in the same way as 'Paranoid Android' - epic but silly, too complex for its own good. But it's stunning tonight, its complexity working for it rather than against it. There are only a couple of other songs in Smile that I recognize, not having heard any bootleg versions. As a piece it comes across as very much of its time - very '66 experimental, risk-taking but slightly incoherent as a piece. The range of instrumentation is remarkable - a piece of wood is sawed at one stage: is Brian Wilson a precursor of Einsturzende Neubauten? The Elements section is especially strong, with an excellent song about wind chimes and the string section donning firemen's helmets for the fire section. It's an ambitious piece but difficult on one hearing to judge what its impact would have been had it been released at the time and to divorce it from nearly 30 years of subsequent music. It ends with 'Good Vibrations' which is just great. The audience rise as one and a party atmosphere ensues. The long encores are a triumphant procession of great song after great song, and for perhaps the first time I am bowled over by the early Beach Boys songs. I find a tear in the eye during - inappropriately - 'Fun, Fun, Fun'. This is something to do with nostalgia, my lost years and empathy for a man who has somehow managed to come out of his dark side and sing these simple songs of youth, 40 years after he wrote them, in a way that has never been bettered. He deserves all the acclaim he is getting. This is the most I've ever spent on a gig by a looong way, so he'd better be good - I can see KaitO six times for this money! "only" 45 quid ;-) Mind you if you add in plane fare and hotel I'm paying a lot more to see Wire in Glasgow.... Two stories worth of [ten] buck nakedness hereabouts. Can't speak for the one in St. Looie, but the fact that was highlighted about this one was its acrylic floor so one can sit downstairs and gaze heavenward to see the promised land. So I hear, I mean. Have not had the pleasure of a personal inspection just yet. No live music yet at this one. An edifice built for poon, not tune. billy =-=-=-=-=- rp: pig in a can - pork pop artificielle - compilation voodoo child - already forgot the title. Whatever it is, it should be "Moby=crap."
