Absolutely. Resist, desist, resist. The powers that be are so desperate to flog off all that juicy bandwidth for digital transmissions of many & varied sorts (principally jazzed-up 'phone services) that their timetable for analogue switch-off will be regarded as fixed & immutable. I reckon if enough people stubbornly cling to their analogue TV's, they may well bribe the populace with either free or near-as-dammit free digital converters, delivered to your door. Remember the cash bonanza that flowed from the selling off of the 3G licences/E.M. spectrum in the UK? Well, as an analogue TV channel takes up ...erm... I *think around 8.6 MHz per station (is it 6.43 MHz for vision and a bit more for the sound carrier?) and the TV allocation runs from Ch21 thru' to Ch60, thats an awful lot of juicy radio space to be translated into revenue. As government of any stripe will already be licking their lips at the cash that could bring in, how far d'you think they'll go to get us all to convert? And then we can *all* get gently microwaved so that kids of all ages can send utterly trivial messages to their buddy who's sat six feet away. Just a thought. Perhaps because it was the only time during Wire mark II where they really indulged their arty and more experimental side. It's the real sequel to 154 for me - Ideal Copy and ABIAC are great albums, but remain pretty streamlined and accessible. With all due respect, it almost seemed like the band was resting on their laurels a bit. That said, Manscape runs a bit too long - I've never cared for "What Do You Say?' and "Sixth Sense" AT ALL and "Children of Groceries" would've been better as a bside. But everything else resonates rather deep with me! I'm sure most people would agree on "Torch It" and "You Hung Your lights In The Trees" being the obvious highlights, but I've always thought "Morning Bell" was brilliant - - one of my alltime favorite Wire tracks. I love how the winding, jaunty melody syncopates against the half-time rhythm of the drums. The 9 minute live version they played on tour was incredible and played up this idea even more - I can only hope it will turn up on some sort of Wire release in the future. ~Michael np dog faced hermans - those deep buds (forgot how awesome this lp was!) ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V7 #47 ******************************
