Not Lloyd - me! Because whilst the eighties pithy poet seemed happy sitting there alone on stage with an acoustic guitar, gently re-living his finest moments (on his birthday!), I was wishing he still had ex-Voidoid Robert Quine in his band, doing what only Robert Quine can do on with an electric guitar. Rock!! Anyway, we got to the venue for about ten past eight to find we'd missed the start (and Perfect Skin by all accounts), but just in time to hear Rattlesnakes. Some songs - Butterflies, You're A Big Girl Now, Jennifer She Said, No Blue Skies and, best of all, the wonderful Like Lovers Do worked better than others in this solo form - whereas Brand New Friend sounded messy and my old fave My Bag didn't cut it without the funky-ish backing. Lloyd was, it must be said, in good voice and the guitar sound was lovely, and he had a nice dry laconic delivery between songs ("You can date my songs by the patterns of words. If it's got the word babe in it then it's from 1988-90. And this one has got far too many "babes" in it.."even at my age I've got very few regrets - lovely wife, kids, but I should never ever have had school-kids singing on this one", etc). But despite all this, and the way he dealt with the gobby Scouse females shouted 'advances' from the back of the venue, it was, ultimately, all a bit too genteel and polite for my liking. THE MOUNTAINEERS (Central Station, Wrexham) As anyone who knows me will testify, I'm not often lost for words, but I really don't know how to describe local village Hope's finest (and Mute recording stars!). They have the worst dressed frontman I've ever seen - slightly podgy bearded bloke with baggy jeans, tight red tracksuit top and bowler hat with the rims bent down - flanked by drummer with sleeveless red t-shirt and leather fighter plane headgear (which he removed to reveal ginger sidies of Noddy Holder proportions!) and cute looking keyboard player, and they played material that was, well I dunno really. Part whimsical folk, occasionally Coral like, and on one of a number of tracks that featured vocoda'd vocals, like Daft Punk!! But whilst there were some nice moments - great three way harmonies to close one number, some fine basslines c/o of the keyboard guy and I particularly liked the 'Daft Punk' one, it was messy, unfocused and whilst I suspect the new single will be a grower, the tunes just weren't memorable enough. File under 'interesting' I suppose, but I found them too eclectic for their own good, and I really think they need to decide where they're heading. This performance just left the audience (apart from the few who indulged in some very inappropriate dancing) looking bemused, and resulted in the drummer kicking his drums over and stomping off in a huff at the end - an act that looks OK if you're in a punk band and your name's Rat Scabies, but which looked as incongruous a sight as the aforementioned dancing. Oh yeah. And when I saw the singer without his headgear on later, I realised the reason for the hat - he had a bit of a Bobby Charlton going on!! ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Feb 2004 22:42:23 -0000 From: "Keith" Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Re:I know why the cage bird doesn't sing > by the way, does Morrissey live in Los Angeles? my ex claims that she has > seen him several times...(but she is a notorius liar) > > RL Yes.
