I've seen virtually every night up to then, however, and it's been enjoyable stuff. Lydon is half in communion with nature, wandering off to talk to lizards and realising that he's been missing something all these years and half getting upset with the conditions (wet jungle) and some of his fellows, especially large-breasted famous-for-being-famous Jordan. He seems in two minds about whether he wants to be there - disappointed when he's not voted off but not storming off despite opportunities to do so. It's good to see him back in the news and becoming known to a new generation - my kids for a start, who have on the whole resisted previous lectures on the Punk Wars but now regard him as a key part of their lives (for two weeks at least and it hasn't stopped my son voting for Peter Andre.) Jordan's performance is a masterclass in C21 celebrity. Every action seems designed to get her on the front page with a view to selling more copies of her autobiography when its published in April - the flirting with Peter Andre, the refusal to wear anything other than revealing outfits, the discreet nudity, the willingness to undergo the challenges, the hint about the affair with David Beckham. Lydon may criticise her for not doing anything around the camp but it's because her brain is working overtime on how to present herself next. Saw The Fall last night at the Camden Barfly, a room above a pub. MES looks like he's wearing a slightly melted wax face these days but he behaved himself, prowling the stage, staring out at the audience and at one point just mouthing the words as if encouraging the audience to join in. The band did fine - mostly new stuff with the usual revisiting of Mr Pharmacist and New Big Prinz. What a great live song the latter is - it's been a highlight of their set for years and never disappointed. Theme from Sparta FC and Bourgeois Town also stood out. Earlier the great Jeffrey Lewis put on a fine, short set, presenting new 'documentaries' (i.e. large comic books) on the history of The Fall and K Records and singing his hideously lyrically complex song about accosting a man who he thinks is Will Oldham. Mere Pseud Mag Ed also seems to be a permanent part of the set and even turned up on the most recent Peel session. Last year they were doing lots of oldies - even stuff like The Classical - but I guess the new bass player doesn't know those yet. Of course MES once mused "they say I rip off Johnny Rotten" - and tomorrow night Sky digital viewers will have a choice of either Mr Smith or Mr Lydon on their screens. One of the more low-rent channels is called Nation 277, which presents quite possibly the ultimate in mindless TV shows. Hosted by disgraced coke-snorting kids TV presenter Richard Bacon, a group of W-list celebrities sit in armchairs and channel surf whatever is on the other channels, live. Tomorrow nights guests include...Mark E Smith. A recipe for car crash television at its finest. Hopefully there's a decent rider for MES beforehand. 7.55pm. "I Fucking will!" Its entirely fitting that in his middle age, Johnny Rotten should get the chance to be the first person to say the word Cunt, live on Primetime british TV (or is he??) He also told Jordan about Steve Jones from the Pistols having had Liposuction, which gave him swollen bollocks. Anyway, I take it all back about Mr Lydon. He has been very entertaining, and seems to be a very decent bloke indeed. (Within the camp he is an intellectual giant compared to the likes of Jordan and failed Aussie pop-Napoleon Peter Andre) In a telling moment when the assorted celebs were discussing his rather abrasive, Rottenesque attitude upon first meeting him, he explained that it was down to shyness. "...It sells a lot of records but it makes for a shit social life..." Maybe Talcy Malcy was right after all. - ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Tuesday, February 03, 2004 10:52 PM Subject: [idealcopy] OT: I'm a Celebrity update > Mr Lydon, upon being informed by Ant (or perhaps Dec) that he was not going > to be voted out of the camp, replied "F*cking C*nts!" > > What a f*cking rotter. > > Mark ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Feb 2004 01:34:37 -0000 From: "Tim" Subject: Re: [idealcopy] OT: I'm a Celebrity update Oh, and tonights show started with a montage of clips accompanied by 'Love will tear us apart' by Joy Division.
