The aim is to travel up from Wiltshire, where I live, probably with my mate in his people mover. We'll have our bikes in the back so we can cycle around during the day. Of course, if he cancels at the last minute (he pulled out of a trip to the Alps last year after paying #80 for his flight - come to think of it he still hasn't paid ME the #80), I'll be even more glad to meet up with some IC-ers for a drink or two! Am I right in thinking that 'Funeral for a Friend' is the crappest band name ever invented? Wire has to be one of the best, it sounds good, it looks good on a record sleeve or a T-Shirt, it hints at the nature of the music in some way but is still ambiguous and mysterious....its abrasive, scratchy, can be dangerous but can be bent into many different shapes but its still Wire. Perfect. But what the fucks that all about..calling your band 'Funeral for a Friend'? Why can't bands be called nice things like Throbbing Gristle or Nurse with Wound? Are they one of these 'EMO' bands? Will someone explain to me what 'EMO' is? I have an inkling its annoying little spoilt brats whining and being miserable but without the humour and wit of Morrissey. Am I right? ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Jan 2004 17:33:58 -0800 From: Paul Pietromonaco Subject: RE: [idealcopy] Crap band names > Are they one of these 'EMO' bands? Will someone explain to me > what 'EMO' is? There's a really good explanation here: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=C4525 Executive Highlights: The groundwork for emo was laid by H|sker D|'s 1984 landmark Zen Arcade, which made it possible for hardcore bands to tackle more personal subject matter and write more tuneful and technically demanding songs. The term "emo" (sometimes lengthened to "emocore") was initially used to describe hardcore bands who favored expressive vocals over the typical barking rants; the first true emo band was Rites of Spring, followed by ex-Minor Threat singer Ian MacKaye's short-lived Embrace. Fugazi became the definitive early emo band, crossing over to alternative rock listeners and getting press for their uncompromisingly anti-commercial attitudes. Groups like the Promise Ring, the Get Up Kids, Braid, Texas Is the Reason, Jimmy Eat World, Joan of Arc, and Jets to Brazil earned substantial followings in the indie-rock world, making emo one of the more popular underground rock styles at the turn of the millennium. Hope this helps! Not so. Indeed, it's hard to see a link between diverse South Wales rock and the intro to Goodbye Yellow Brick Road." With hundreds and thousands sprinkled all over it. Sadly the NME have screwed up their tour by booking these clowns as headliners (!) while Franz Ferdinand (No 3 in the hit parade) are opening the bill. Mark * it says so in this week's NME.
