Frank Gehry revealed his much anticipated design for the AGO this morning here in Toronto . The "new building" page also has a link to views of the architectural model in the sidebar. In addition to housing some very imposrtant pieces of Canadian and International artwork, the AGO is home to the largest collection of Henry Moore sculptures in the world. I love his work and I think the design is amazing. What I find really incredible to me about this building proposal is what my expectation of it was compared to reality. I was expecting something much more whimsical from Gehry, but to me this seems to be a "Toronto" take on Gehry's style-- flashy but not too flashy. As my wife said, the new staircase is "sex on wheels." It's hard to say what that means as she says that about me all the time ;-) What with Libeskind doing the new design for The Royal Ontario Museum, Norman Foster doing a building at U of Toronto, and a new opera house, Toronto seems to be going through a cultural renaissence. I just might hand around a while. I wouldn't have recognized this as a Gehry either. Obviously he has listened to his critics saying his Walt Disney Concert Hall in LA resembled the Bilbao Guggenheim & Seattle's Experience Music Project too much and that he was becoming a bit of a one trick pony. He seems to have taken a new direction now, though there are hints of the deconstructivism of his earlier years here as well. Not too keen on the rather revisionistic Walker Court part though. Why does he feel he has to use the ancient greek temple cliche? Was this demanded by the city council you know? To fit the surrounding buildings no doubt? These days it seems like cities want Gehry's buildings in the same manner as people want (or used to want) Philippe Starck designs in their homes. You just don't belong to the "hip crowd" untill you get yourself one of these pretty gems. > As my wife said, the new staircase is "sex on wheels." The staircase looks amazing indeed! Like a Mozart melody (or a Hooky bass) line it seems to have a mind of it's (sorry Bruno) own. > It's hard to say what that means as she says that about me all the time ;-) You on rollerskates Eric, or in a wheelchair? ;-) > What with Libeskind doing the new design for The Royal Ontario Museum, > Norman Foster doing a building at U of Toronto, and a new opera house, > Toronto seems to be going through a cultural renaissence. Now all Toronto needs to play with the biggies is a weird and intelligent building by Rem Koolhaas, the most likely candidate to fit the wirespace (Mark)) in architecture imo. Btw, Liebeskind's designs for the WTC site seem promising. Anything better than those ugly original towers! http://www.gothamist.com/images/liebdesign.jpg Bart PS: Gehry has made a great cardboard Wigglechair as well: http://www.eamesplus.com/catalog/wiggle_side_chair__easy_edges__by_frank_geh ry_from_vitra_1844424.htm ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V7 #29 ******************************
