Forgive me for harping on, but it seems like I'm not the only one... Reviews at www.manchestermusic.co.uk and www.highvoltage.org.uk, both are very positive Manchestermusic... There's an elite group of bands out there on the streets on Manchester. Those who love the cut and the jib of post rock, alternative noise. The sounds that shave off a little slice of sonic hell, wrap it into a complex package and then insist on presenting it all as noisily as possible. Joining the cult of bands like The Sonar Yen and Tsuji Giri are The Longcut. Brave enough to remember Sonic Youth and pre-Goth 80's indie, The Loncut are brazen in their use of semi-instrumentals, high frequencies and almost hidden support from underlying electronica. "Transition" is an ear pummelling but almost fragile sonic attack. "The Kiss Off" is driven by determined bass and guitar riffs and sonar tight pulsating drum machine clicks. The haunting, restrained distant voice is as much for effect as anything else. There's a bleak outlook to the song with its metronome timing and shimmering guitars. "DVT" has spangling guitars mastering the dark art of a cold sharp Chameleons classic. Fantastically simple yet so emotionally fraught and full of a deep seated but retrospective anger. Sheer brilliance as guitars crash and splinter in their own rasping glory. "Spires" harks back even further with it's deep, distressing handful of notes bass line. The guitar again is achingly powerful, simplistic but menacingly effective. Capturing such atmospherics are never easy but The Longcut have achieved some headshrinking, thematic scores, that provide some next generation hope for bands that soundtrack our urban existence. Already one of my favourite bands for 2004. MMMMM High voltage... With a sound more fitting to a punk-funk obsessed New York, The Longcut will surely elevate to massive proportions on the domestic scene, before infiltrating that obtuse environment. With similarly minded British talent like The Futureheads and Franz Ferdinand pushing the boundaries, there seems to be a wealth of talent with their own interpretations on modern music. Opening track 'Transition', is simply an amazing tune, filled with incessant drumming beats, sharp guitar parts and heaving bass lines. It's kind of similar to a lot of other stuff, but remarkable at the same time. It features the anthemic nature of The Rapture, the creativity of Talking Heads and the Britishness of Gang of Four. There's so much in 'Transition' to enjoy, as its uniqueness is difficult to pinpoint. Whilst the other three tracks fail to match the urgency and addictiveness of this track, they act as a subtle illustration of the band's incredible amount of talent. 'The Kiss Off' is initially subdued and later riotous, but continuously compelling. 'Dvt' continues in this vein, as the post-rock aspect of the band seeps through. Whilst 'Transition' has to be the bands most accessible track, 'Spires' is musically their best. The Sigur Ros out bursts are luscious, and wholly captivating. The diversity of the band is surely their greatest asset. The Mogwai/Liars comparisons seem justified, on a musically and ideological basis. As both these acts evolve and adapt continually, a comparison somewhat grandiose and a little over the top perhaps, but a great illustration of the bands potential. www.thelongcut.com - News & MP3 ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Jan 2004 17:33:46 +0000 From: Andrew Walkingshaw Subject: Re: [idealcopy] The Longcut - Transition On Wed, Jan 21, 2004 at 05:36:28PM -0000, Keith Astbury wrote: > Raved about this lot a few weeks ago. Themes of heartbreak, loss, and misery dominate the lyrics, and the music itself is resolutely downbeat — the acoustic guitars that once defined '70s-era singer/songwriters certainly resurface here, but much of the music is far more dissonant and intense, conjuring much darker atmospheres and textures.
