It contained tracks largely from jangly indie bands of the day, and therefore became the unifying title for the "movement", such that it was. There was an earlier C81 tape, containing a lot of classic post-punk. And a later, largely forgotten, C96. >> i have never heard of Tallulah Gosh.<< You're not missing much. A very fey indie band, boy/girl line-up, much ridiculed at the time for taking wimpy guitar pop to wimpy extremes. A little unfair to lump B&S in with them. NME cassette in 1986 that was 86 mins long. Became synonymous with late 80's indie music. There was supposedly a C86 sound, and to some degree there was, but some of the bands on the cassette (Stump/Primal Scream for example) were very different. Nontheless this is an effective recommendation and I'll be there next time they come near the south coast. Re.Eurovision new wave: there was a Lene Lovich lookalike who did a track called "I just want to be me" in about 1980. Sounded good to a 14 year old but lost out narrowly (relying on memory here) to CoCo who were Bucks Fizz predecessors. Best recent Eurovision entry was a song called "Yodel in the Canyon of Love" which inexplicably didn't make the final cut. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Jan 2004 18:59:10 EST From: HowardJSpencer@aol.com Subject: [idealcopy] Re: eurovision forgot to sign off or entitle last, sorry. That did it. I just went to the Echo Lounge website and purchased a British Sea Power ticket. Hopefully, I'll see some fellow Idealcopyists there. On the subject of British Sea Power, I've heard "the land-girls" mentioned in context to BSP shows. What are the land-girls? There will actually be girls at this event? I've talked two friends into going to the Church show, by the way. If anyone here is up for that, let me know and we'll have to meet at some point. What are the land-girls? There will actually > be girls at this event?<< While the menfolk were off fighting the punk rock wars, the women of olde England were conscripted to work the farms. Oh alright, it was World War 2, but you get the picture. However BSP's close female fans (I presume they're the band's girlfriends) turn up attired in rather glamorous 1940s-style dresses (made from special BSP fabric). These items are sometimes available to buy on the excellent BSP merchandise stand, which resembles a tombola stall at a village fete. Close your eyes and think of England. Also I'm surprised more people didn't note the phenomenal Nirvana Tampon ad in the Day Today's MTV spoof. Made before Kurt topped himself too.
