Might be up for that. - --------------------------- There are three London Shins dates next week their first UK appearances AFAIK. Im seeing them on Thursday at the Scala supporting Mighty Mouse. Prior to that, on Weds they are at the Camden Barfly and on Tuesday at the Arts Cafi in Commercial St. Not sure about the ticket availability for any of these. Ive been waiting to see them since hearing the vinyl version of New Slang while washing up, listening to Peel a couple of years ago. It stopped me dead in my tracks. Havent heard the second album although Ive been told its Rolling Stones album of the year! (not necessarily a good thing of course). Notably excluded in the discussions on progressive rock so far even though they were around at the time. I recall a short-lived attempt to brand them (and others of their ilk such as Barclay James Harvest) as soft-rock. Argus can be regarded as a progressive rock album I think, although some of the earlier stuff is a bit too boogie. The first band I saw live as an adolescent gig-goer. I quite liked them although I never bought product, primarily because a friend did and I listened to his (as we all did back then - bleeding kids today don't know how lucky they've got it with their free downloads, mutter mutter). A friend of mine held a torch for them until quite recently, going to virtually all their London gigs, but he's grown out of love now as they are allegedly a pale shadow of their original self. Their most interesting recent manifestation was to perform in Camden a few years back as part of a trance night - a bizarre decision as Ash fans stayed away and trance fans must have hated it. Shows a certain ambition though. Another the Keith ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Jan 2004 12:26:03 -0000 From: "Keith Knight" Subject: RE: [idealcopy] RE: BSP coming to ATL (and so is The Church) I'd suggest that is now an unmissable gig, Dan. PJ was asking for views on BSP live. As I've said here before, I enjoy them live (I've seen them 4 times on the past coupe of years) but more for the show than the music - the foliage, the uniforms, the land-girls, the free gifts (BSP Kendal Mintcake last time out), the big drum and - last time - the man in the huge bear costume. In fact the last gig (at ULU in Oct or Nov) was my favourite so far because they entered a significant wig-out phase at the end. If you like the album they are definitely recommended. Although whether they can cope with KaitO as warm-up is debatable - I haven't seen anyone who has so far. As I've said many times, a band at the peak of their powers and one of the very greatest live experiences of my life. Stick yourself at the front on the left-hand side of the stage and just watch Dave Lake do things to that guitar. Nowhere is probably my favorite Ride album as a whole, but "Leave Them All Behind" from Going Blank Again is damn near perfect. As far as shoegazer music is concerned, I pretty much like it all. Some of the albums that get regular spins on my stereo: My Bloody Valentine - everything after their bad 1985 debut album Ride - everything Lush - Spooky, Split Slowdive - everything Chapterhouse - Whirlpool Lilys - In The Presence Of Nothing Pale Saints - In Ribbons The Swirlies - the one with the long title that I can't remember at moment. The shoegazer phenomenon flourished during my college years when I was looking for something different than the Seattle stuff on all of the radio stations, so that may be one reason for my affinity as such.
