About the only connection that comes to mind would be the sort of fringe, experimental rock musicians who take part in performances like your Barbican M25 event - Scanner, The KLF people... Iain Sinclair: Well, they've always come to me, and obliquely via a guy called Paul Smith, a concert promoter and secret genius behind the 'Blast First' and 'King Mob' labels. I wouldn't have come across them otherwise. I really like listening to it - Bruce Gilbert of Wire, particularly, I find amazing, I find his hungry way with sound obsessive and mind warping. He's been vital to the films we've done with Chris Petit... For Sinclair fans out there, this book is well worth checking out... I remember purchasing it on the day of release because I had seen them open for Interpol last December and was excited about getting the album. It may have been released earlier overseas, but I'm not sure. Glad to see more Calla supporters on the list. I've met the frontman both times that I've seen the band and he's a cool "next door neighbor" type of person. I hope that they can keep it going. Broadcast - HaHaHaSound The Bug - Pressure (Great mix of Ragga toasting and monstrous Aphexy Beats by Kevin Martin) Villalobos - Alcachofa (Spidery Surround Sound microwaved housey IDM) High Llamas - Beet Maize & Corn (Gorgeous understated return to form, White Pianos across the Hills of Beverley...) John Cale - Hobosapiens (Proper grown-ups music, but highly listenable LapTop Dadrock) Akufen - My Way (Wonderful sparkly dance music made from charity-shop samples and random FM Radio found sounds) Autechre - Draft 7.30 Kraftwerk - Tour De France Soundtracks Wire - Send Cool As Ice - BeMusic (aka pre-Acid House Factory dance remixes by Bernard Sumner & ACRs Donald) Top Gigs John Cale at the Hope & Grape, Manchester.....Huge, brilliant ego in a tiny venue. Stunning. Wire at the Barbican. Chapman's couldn't possibly live up to the hype (they didn't). Punk Rock still sounds shit in cavernous Classical venues (when will they learn?), Problems with the lip synching in the second half, bruce broke his strap, second send obviously curtailed due to time restrictions. It was still wonderful, tense and a keynote Wire performance. But please... no more seated gigs! Dexys at Manchester Academy. Similar attitude but with much baggier suits and a trombone...and we kicked our seats away and danced. Lots of extended weird bits that left a lot of beery 80s throwbacks very confused....but left me, not a huge fan of the band, very entertained. Apart from that fucking awful cover of 'The Nightshift". Broken Social Scene at Night & Day Manchester. (The Fleetwood Mac of the Canadian alt-rock scene.....loads of egos & guitar heroes bumping around like Dodgems on a tiny stage....) Broadcast at Manchester Hop & Grape (Don't be put off by the Austin Powers look...) Durutti Column at Manchester Hop & Grape (Because there is only one Bruce Mitchell) The Rapture - The Hop & Grape ...Highly entertaining, esp. the cover of Gary Glitters rock & roll (after Human League) which closed the set. Top Laughs (Sorry non-UK listees and those of you think TV Comedy is trivial flotsam..its an obsession of mine) 'Little Britain'. Patchy, but potentially brilliant as was the first series of the The Fast Show. The best thing about it is that apparently the characters Lou and Andy, were in fact based loosely on Lou Reed and Andy Warhol (Lou does sport a Mullet not unlike that of late 80s Reed) Marion & Jeff Series Two: Extraordinary....is it comedy? .....and I'm Sorry, despite inevitable over-exposure, appearing 'in character' on chat shows, and utterly terrible comedy Xmas record, Avid Merrion is still funny. Marilyn Manson portrayed as a sort of Ealing Comedy cad was brilliant, and the morphing of UK Garage Sensation Craig David with Billy Casper from 'Kes' still works for me. IdealCopies.......I wish you all a Very, Merry Christmas indeed. Even Graeme. Whilst I am reclining in my smoking jacket, in the east wing of Robinson Manor, gorging myself on Turkey, Twiglets, 'After Eight' mints and gallons of Baileys while watching "Eastenders Knees Up" and "The Office" Christmas special.........I shall spare a thought for the Crack'd one...who no doubt will be enjoying Christmas in Whalley Range with a Vegan nut-cutlet, a glass of organic mead and tuning his clockwork AM radio to listen to John Peel playing a Melt Banana session on the World Service, plotting which hapless band's tourbus he will hijack next.
