I think it took Live Aid to give Queen that > status anyway (apologies for delayed response , xmas preparations and all that.........) jesus , hasn't elton been trying to fill that freddie shaped hole with some gusto ever since he turned up his toes? and if you're looking for a preening egomaniac with no discernible talent (i wasn't) then robbie williams ain't doing too bad (3 nights sold out at milton keynes bowl , far more than freddie ever managed). and pop idol et al seems to be trying very hard to get a conveyor belt of such dross going. i hate it. still think the theory that live aid destroyed pop music for about 5 years is pretty valid. in which queen were the main beneficiaries. most of the rest of that bill are still treading the boards , sadly , so i can't see much need for any faux nostalgia here. (talking of which a colleague of mine went to see UB40 last week and was very impressed with the stranglers 40 minute greatest hits set. the new singer is so realistic she didn't actually realise he wasn't the original one. though jet black is apparently looking "a bit rough" these days..............) i think the spinal tap jibes at the darkness are most unfair. they're much more like "bad news". p ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Dec 2003 15:09:57 +0100 From: "Jan J Noorda" Subject: [idealcopy] List (en) 2003 some favourites this year Wire: Send Chris Watson: Weather Report Einsturzende Neubauten: Supporters #1CD Philip Jeck: 7 Akatombo: Trace Routes Fennesz: Live in Japan And 2004: It starts really amazing new sampler: Spire (Touch) new cd Einstuerzende Neubauten: Perpetuum Mobilae new cd Tuxedomoon new cd Lisa Gerrard new cd Lewis/Duncan new cd Liars box Minimal Compact and R&B3 tension increases Jan J ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Dec 2003 11:15:13 -0600 (CST) From: voyteck@webtv.net Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Cottage/How do they sleep Didn't we touch on this a few years ago? I remember commenting on The 1st Letter, with Robert 'not participating'. 'Take it' & 'How Do You Sleep' in the same vein? I tend to believe the whole album is somewhat directed internally towards the future of Wire members well being. A brilliant plea to Robert to enjoy the joy ride? Who could replace (trace) him? Can it be he jumped too soon? "The whole is greater than the sum of it's parts" type of underlying theme? Ambiguous (to us)? It was just for then (them), seemingly working out the quandry. Back on parade, I would love to hear the styles / techniques of 154 & The 1st letter in a 2004 (or?) release, such as their observations set in non-time space (timelessness). Is it coincidence with winter begining tomorrow here in the northern hemisphere (Happy New Year to those follow this) to yearn for the 'dog days' (every dog has it's day)? One album / tour would $et them well credentials. Never underestimate the importance of polished shoes on such social occasion.
