I knew he/she would win it ! I saw a show of his in Amsterdam last year and quite liked the work. An interesting 'clash'(in the best sense) of form and content. Draws you in. Fairly typical of the Turner jury to NOT pick the 'hot favourite', the Chapmans... I find I still need to be convinced by them. I keep getting this feeling that they are sniggering behind our backs... doubtless they are clever chaps, but perhaps they are a bit too clever for their own good. Found the idea of them not talking about their work a disappointing cop out. And the idea of strapping the camera on the back of a dog as our only view of their studio just plain irritating... though irritation seems to be a significant part of their agenda... I was actually relieved they didn't win it. The woman with the organic matter (whose name escapes me now), had some semi-interesting work, but I knew she wasn't going to get the dosh. And even though Willy (who I know quite well, having worked on the set up of a major retrospective of his in The Irish Museum of Modern Art last year) had been nominated in 1994, I had a feeling, that, even given that, and, though there was the idea that his work is fairly on the ball (which I don't think it is anymore) in terms of the present stage Anglo-Irish politics, that they just wouldn't opt for him. I think the work has significantly disimproved now that he's working with film (the 'Re-run' piece that's in The Tate was part of the IMMA show). I think the earlier (mid to late 80s) photo-text pieces were a lot stronger. I think the work has gotten too diluted now. Where they go wrong, of course, is in assuming that the wretched road is evil simply because of the incredible carnage and frustration it engenders every day. In fact, very few people on the face of the planet know that the very shape of the M25 forms the sigil odegra in the language of the Black Priesthood of Ancient Mu, and means "Hail the Great Beast, Devourer of Worlds." The thousands of motorists who daily fume their way around it's serpentine lengths have the same effect as water on a prayer wheel, grinding out an endless fog of low-grade evil to pollute the metaphysical atmosphere for scores of miles around." it's a really funny book...decided to dig it out to celebrate the return of my recurring nightmares/dreams of the Apocalypse....needed something to balance out the reading of Revelations and Maldoror... I don't know how it is I came to to read it but here it is: "When she stepped away from the keyboard to take centre-stage on the superlative, bluesy deep funk Streets of New York, which was a sneak preview single but isn't on the new album, Keys was overshadowed by a manic guest rapper who whipped up the crowd. As the two grooved in time, rocking their bodies back and forth, Keys looked like a calisthenics instructor filmed in stop-motion photography." So there it is. So many ripped jeans/smart jackets at the Strokes. So many people with khaki and tree branches at BSP. Now are these people sad or dedicated? I can remember going to see the Clash as a youngster in a pvc jacket with various band names written in tippex on the back, a home made UK Subs t-shirt (Felt tip pens and cut out holes) and a pair of brown flared cords with zips I'd sewn on myself. I thought I looked the business. Needless to say I think we all think I looked like a knob.
