Not this one, Robert, believe me. Along with its sister town Prestatyn, Rhyl is an ugly, depressed town with virtually nothing going for it. We have quite a few British seaside towns in this category. People don't go on UK seaside holidays much anymore (package tours to the Meditteranean has been the seaside holiday of choice for 25 years now) and many are now used as Bed and Breakfast accommodation for people on social security. There's lots of hard drug use in many of these places. Having said that, I've been on a number of British seaside holidays since having kids (too much hassle to fly with them when they were young) and there are still a number of great locations - Brighton, Whitby, the East Anglian towns of Southwold and Aldeburgh, St Ives (in fact all of Cornwall pretty much), Lyme Regis, Tenby (thought I'd throw a Welsh one in to keep Keith happy)...... Yes, I can confirm that places like Weston-super-Mare in my part of the world have big drugs problems, sadly, but there are still seaside places with some charm. Padstow, in Cornwall, is doing wonderfully after the BBC put chef Rick Stein on the small screen. He's ploughed loads of money into the town, opening more (and cheaper) restuarants and a guest house. I remember St Ives well as my first girlfriend lived there - people there were glad when we split up as they weren't being woken by my Honda 500 as I started it up to go home to Camborne. Now there's a funny place to live... Eg, once I went to see ACR, supported by 52nd Street. However a fine evening of Manc avant-funk was somewhat disrupted by the presence of Big Country in between the two. Enthusiastic Scotsmen in shorts, playing guitars that sounded like bagpipes, was not required. Also The Fall, supported by Felt (another good match) but with Goth fops Danse Society in between. Talk Talk became brilliant on their last few releases (only one track from _Spirit of Eden_ makes it onto this comp -- the adequate "I Believe In You"). in particular, i say that _Spirit of Eden_ (released in 1988) and _Laughing Stock_ (released in 1991) are as influential in the development of what we know call post-rock as the much lauded Splint were. _Laughing Stock_ is a stunningly brilliant album, and i believe is the inspiration for all that Sigur Ros (much hailed these days) have done with their lives. discuss. How many times can something be repackaged? A true fan would have them all anyway. Perhaps unreleased mixes, b-sides or even demos could be added for extra value. Most of the time these compilations don't even use the remasters. Disky is a very good example of this. (although they have released some dvd compilations and the sound is mixed in 5.1) I'll stick with the remasters and old 12". cheers, Billy --- Paul Pietromonaco wrote: > > Having said that there was a CD by Talk Talk for 4 > > quid (Time It's Time). I've heard it's the final frontier ;-) No, seriously. Thanks for that Ari. I am blown away by the Hubble images having seen them printed in high resolution, multi-colour process, glory. The coolest moment in that video was for me was watching the cloud of dust and gas disperse away from that "mysterious" star. This always brings me back to that moment in Hardy's The Mayor of Casterbridge, where, waking up delirious and hungover after having sold his wife for a drinking binge, he walks out "under the canopy of the universe" and realizes just how small he is. Been checking out the Cope website/chat area last few days. They're a funny lot! People are voting for their top 25 albums. Loads of people votes so far, and though quite a few solo Cope albums got voted for (Jehovahkill seems esp popular) amongst the numerous votes for Marquee Moon, Funhouse (both of which I voted for) and various LP's by Sabbath (which I didn't!), only one other person has included a TX LP. I asked the question - doesn't anyone here like the Teardrops and the only reply I got was basically, "No, sod the Teardrops." And I thought it was a Julian Cope website!! Well Tenby just happens to be my fave UK resort. Not because it's in Wales either! Lovely little place, that I visited a lot as a child, and that's still *fairly* unspoilt, with the glorious golden South Beach, and the nearby Caldey Island where the monks make delicious chocolate (and perfume!!). And there's a pretty good little record shop on the main street at Tenby, a few doors up from Woolies, that's sometimes worth a visit for stuff that's out of stock elsewhere. Picked up cd's by Tim Buckley and Marsha Hunt last time I was there a year or so back. Keith ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V6 #363 *******************************
