Chicane Bootleg Formed by Edwin Pouncey in the Spring of 1977 "because there was a talent night at the Royal College Of Art", their first gig ended (like so many of their other gigs) in a fight, to disguise their lack of material. Someone there offered them a gig for money so a set of 10 songs was quickly cobbled together. More gigs followed. Ricky Slaughter left to join The Motors, ROBERT GOTOBED went to Wire and the line-up stabilised to include the nucleus of Edwin Pouncey, Steve Spear and Marion Fudger. A hippie guy and his stripper girlfriend who ran a record shop in the basement of Kensington Market decided to start a label and approached the Art Attacks. They released the 7,500 selling "I Am A Dalek" b/w "Neutron Bomb" single, but the relationship terminated when the stripper appeared on stage semi-naked and decided to whip an unamused Edwin. Their next foray into the studio was to record the classic "Arabs In 'Arrads" for the first ever punk rock compilation album, "Streets" on Beggars Banquet. Suffering from stage fright, Edwin would only appear on-stage when inebriated. Each performance was unpredictable. Aside from the frequent fights, there was one occasion when Edwin climbed inside the kick drum and refused to perform, and once when he invited a tramp to ramble meaninglessly into the microphone, rather than sing himself. Tours with The Lurkers, Generation X, The Motors and Rock Against Racism followed, as did two live tracks "Animal Bondage" and "Frankenstein's Heartbeat" on the "Live At The Vortex" album. The pressures of finishing their degrees terminated the band and the posthumous "Punk Rock Stars" b/w "Rat City" single was released. This 20-track compilation features all their recorded tracks, plus unreleased material and a live show from the Vortex in 1978. Packaged in a sleeve designed by Edwin Pouncey (AKA Savage Pencil) it contains an 8-page booklet with photos and cartoons and an in depth interview with Edwin and Steve conducted by noted (and notorious) Stewart Home. In September they played in Liverpool and Blackpool as bottom-of-the-bill supports. I saw the Blackpool gig; Mr Jackson of this parish witnessed the Liverpool one. I think the first London gig was at Heaven in early 81. NLP would have been about a year later, early 82. It's a strong collection of tracks with 3 CD's of music and a DVD with the long out-of-print "Storytelling Giant" collection of Talking Heads music videos. The music is remastered and has a good sonic punch to it that the old Sand In The Vasoline collection doesn't have...the tracklist is much improved as well, in my opinion. The only problem with this otherwise brilliant box set lies with the physical presentation itself. Once In A Lifetime has the most cumbersome packaging that I've ever seen in a music release, even by box set standards. The box set consists of a long (>2') and narrow (6'') coffee table book with the CD's and DVD's held in pouches within the book cover. The book will likely rip out of its spine if not opened while flat on a surface. This is a shame, because the liner notes (featuring passages by all four band members) are quite fascinating. My final verdict: Music content = A+ "Storytelling Giant" DVD = A+ Liner Notes = A Packaging = D- Here is a link to the tracklist for all interested: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000DII8Q/qid=1070032724/sr=2-1/ref=sr_2_1/002-7524182-1664062 Jason _________________________________________________________________ Say goodbye to busy signals and slow downloads with a high-speed Internet connection! The differences between the two seem to be located around their differing interpretations of Hegelian dialectics as much as the issue of wealth distribution. And it's all very complicated to be going into on a Wire list! However, I can say this: Home is a kind of anarchist influenced by certain strands of Situationism and Communism. He often berates anarchists but then in other interviews has declared that he is one. He berates the Proudhonian form of anarchism on account of Proudhon's fascism. Proudhon's anarchism was based on a fierce patriotism for France which he believed had been corrupted by waves of immigration (amongst other factors). He wanted France to return to its 'natural' state. IOW he believed in race as a given and furthermore that some races were better than others. He was especially anti-semitic. (He was also a sexist.) Most importantly for Home (and for other writers e.g. Peter Marshall) he anticipated the nazis in believing that race was linked with the land on which one is born. So there is a direct line from Proudhonian anarchism to the Green Anarchist movement of today which - as Home indicates in the DIJ article - has very close links with the third way era National Front loons such as Patrick Harrington. (During the 1980s and 1990s what few people were left in the NF redefined themselves in very Green terms. There was a good BBC doc on a few years ago about this which showed a derelict farm they'd bought in France.) Also, Bakunin's anarchism relied on having secret cells of elite persons which is obviously not very democratic and anarchist. Lewisham and Grunwick: Lewisham was in response to a NF march. Grunwick is documented here: http://www.socialistparty.org.uk/militant/mil2frame.htm?ch14.htm And I should point out that if anyone looks at Home's writings on his website the John Roberts he refers to is not me!
