Yes, I was off work with a bad back the other day and had the chance to go over some of my Wire CD collection in the light of buying Send. Manscape is very hard to warm to - it sounds like some great material is fighting to be heard. The First Letter always gets lukewarm reviews but I found it impossible to drag myself away from it - the surreal lyrics, Graham's delivery and the electronic soundscapes have not aged badly at all. Contrast this with Send, where I struggle to remember any memorable words. Some of the music's outstanding, though. It's pretty successful as these things go and well worth the money. Highlights include Liz Fraser covering Robert Wyatt's version of Chic's 'At Last I am Free', (IC's Liz fans will enjoy this one), Jeffrey Lewis doing live fave 'Part-Time Punks' and The Fiery Furnaces's brave stab at The Fall's 'Winter' (it's not often The Fall are covered in my experience). As well as Alasdair Roberts covering Ivor Cutler's 'I Had a Little Boat' (which I suspect that all non-Roberts fans - Hi Alistair! - - will find toe-curling). But the two highlights for me are two Galaxie 500 covers - BSP performing 'Tugboat' (which is frankly one of the best things they've committed to record) and The Tyde (who?) covering 'Tell Me', which is simply beautiful. At this point I declare my complete ignorance. You know how there are some bands that evade you completely? (admittedly Mark may not understand this experience but hopefully others of you will). Well, Galaxie 500 are one of those for me. Never heard anything they've done, never knowingly seen them, quite happy to let them have existed without me having to care. Well, I was wrong. I now need to know what I need to know. Any pointers gratefully received. Do I need to get everything? Mine could be a minority opinion, but I prefer both of the post-G500 splinter bands -- Damon & Naomi and especially Luna -- to Galaxie 500 themselves. That's not a knock on the G500 stuff; rather, it's a case of these individuals continuing to expand their reach *and* grasp. If I were you, I'd buy three CDs: THE PORTABLE GALAXIE 500 LUNA LIVE (great performances of songs that span Wareham's career, including G500's "4th of July") DAMON AND NAOMI WITH GHOST Then pursue whatever clicks with you the most. later, Miles ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Nov 2003 17:39:58 EST From: MarkBursa@aol.com Subject: Re: [idealcopy] OT: I just wanna be your Tugboat Captain > >>But the two highlights for me are two Galaxie 500 covers - BSP > performing 'Tugboat' (which is frankly one of the best things they've > committed to record) and The Tyde (who?) covering 'Tell Me', which is > simply beautiful. Any pointers gratefully received. Do I need > to get everything?<< Absolutely. there are three albums, plus singles which are compiled on a best of - or better if you can find it, a beautifully made box set. Avoid the live album - it's like a poor bootleg. I absolutely loved G500 at the time - really took the 80s Velvets thing to an extreme by slowing it right down - the opposite of the Feelies hi-speed VU version. Just came and went in about 3 years. Saw them a few times including a blistering gig at ULU. In a similar vein were Codeine, even slower and a bit more complex. Liked them a lot too. As for the Tyde, they're a Californian band that idolises, of all people, Felt. The singer does a fabulous Lawrence impresonation - some of their songs are pure pastiche. Download 'go ask yer dad' off the second album if you don't believe me. As for the G500 spin-offs, the Damon & Naomi axis is much closer to G500. Their first release was an EP as Pierre Etoile ('Rock Star' - geddit) and is every bit as good as G500. Later stuff gets a bit winsome but the album with Ghost is excellent. Luna are just a bit too conventional - they lack G500's unique dynamics. Don't mind them, but just don't have the same spark. They recorded an ordinary cover of Outdoor Miner on a single once. There. On topic, and neatly back to cover versions! Mark ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V6 #343 *******************************
