You may not recognize the name, but chances are you recognize his talent. Tony Thompson played drums on some of the most popular and greatest music of the late 1970s and most especially the 1980s. He was a founding member of Chic, and as such he worked with Sister Sledge and Diana Ross, among other artists that band backed up. He played with David Bowie on "Let's Dance," he backed Madonna on "Like a Virgin," and he supported Robert Palmer on "Addicted to Love." His beats were imitated (Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight" was built on the rhythm track to Chic's "Good Times") and sampled throughout the history of hip-hop. Tony Thompson was a master drummer, capable of playing all sorts of styles while always bringing a personal touch to the music. He passed away Tuesday, Sept. 12, at the age of 47, from renal cancer. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Nov 2003 16:41:31 -0000 From: "Keith Astbury" Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Tony Thompson passes I recognise the name alright. TT is someone who would definitely be in my top 10 all time drummers. Tracklisting as follows... WIRE - MARY IS A DYKE (BEHIND THE CURTAIN) HE SAID - PUMP (HAIL) WIR - SEXY & RICH (JANET) (WIRVIEN) DOME - BECAUSE WE MUST - "VERSION 1" (YCLEPT) SILO - TEMPLATES (INSTAR) WIRE - SMALL BLACK REPTILE (MANSCAPE) COLIN NEWMAN - SPACED IN (BASTARD) WIRE - SAFE (TURNS AND STROKES) MY BLOODY VALENTINE - MAP REF 41N 93W (WHORE) HOX - HOW HIGH IS IS (IT-NESS) WIRE - MERCY (THIRD DAY) COLIN NEWMAN - TSUNAMI (SWIM TEAM #2) IMMERSION - LES ISLES FLOTTANTES (OSCILLATING) MAIN - USED TO (WHORE) WIRE - ANOTHER THE LETTER (BEHIND THE CURTAIN) WIRE - 12XU (IT'S ALL IN THE BROCHURE) It hasn't made it to the car yet - it's been on heavy rotation in the house. I know it might seem a bit of a mixed bag, but I can't tell you how good Pump sounds coming on after the short sharp blast of Mary!! Love it or loathe it, it was a big beat, and this was The Heartbeat of the 1980s. Seems his family have a fair old amount of debit to pay in medical expenses after his battle with cancer.
