Sorry but for one more time I have to talk about Wire again on this list: I'm still pushing for Wire to put out a DVD (or 2) that would feature old appearances or whathaveyou, but Can has always been alot more savvy in trolling their archives and pushing themselves as an innovative band of importance, while Wire has always flown under the radar often turning their backs on their own significant pasts, or surprisingly dipping into it when least expected. The electronic and experimental rock kids jumped all over Can within the last 8 years and this gave Can a new audience to sell to. and, as Can is absolutely no longer a working entity, nor had been for years, it also makes it easier to dig up and release old material or footage. During their more active periods, Can concentrated on putting out albums and/or singles while all of the members worked on solo projects at the same time (ala Wire) however, if you look at Can's working methods, right from the get-go they were always the kind of band that had long jams recorded, the occasional short structured piece, many experiemtnal pieces, and hence boat-loads of outtakes for years to come. From the start they were releasing albums like (Un)Limited Edition etc. So seemingly the group members were into putting this outtake stuff out as part of the band's vision. Also the other main element for Can is management - when it was agreed to let their keyboardist Irmin Shmidt's wife take over the reins as a manager - it was not only in-house and a trusting relationship, but she has worked her butt off at keeping the web site, merchandise and newly released items ongoing. as a coordinator she is excellent. Also she was not a musician in the band and she wasn't thinking about solo projects that could take up her time. So the visual aspect of Can's heyday has never been overlooked. I have the Can box set which is not only creative, but also covers alot of ground. Lastly in ragards to Can - they have been pretty approachable friendly folks - you can reach some of them via email and every time I have spoken to Hoger Czukay he is really one happy go lucky guy... and now onto Wire: I think Wire has been pretty good at allowing us all to hear outtakes and live material from over the years, but the visual aspect of the band is nil for me here in the States, other than seeing them live or catching a rare video clip or two. I think that the same kids that are these days hold such high regard for all things late '70s and '80s and still love bands like Wire as a legendary band. Hell, a new multi-cd Rhino box set of punk rock gems just came out this week and I heard the Wire track from it being blasted in several Newbury Comics stores in this area - multiply that by the entire hipster record shop spider web accross America and you can't ask to reach more potential new and old fans. Plus the new Wire material that I play for folks usually blows them away. I hear that the Wire crew sees this list, so I advise they get an outsider to compile material for a Wire film - (ala the Who's 'Kid's Are Alright') or do it themselves using Can as a loose model to work from - be creative, and have fun - I won't tell, but I will buy it. Message to Wire: you've made videos and have done visual/sound installations galore, so you're obviously not just about writing a few tunes to be only heard and not seen. I can't think of any logical counter attack for not releasing some official dvds. all the best, - - Robert ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Nov 2003 10:55:43 EST From: RLynn9@aol.com Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Why a Can dvd but no Wire?? here's why... thanks Bill... er, i mean Robert Robert ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Nov 2003 08:06:20 -0800 (PST) From: Ari Britt Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Why a Can dvd but no Wire?? here's why... "Can are present in the DNA of everyone from the Happy Mondays and Mogwai to DFA". Said they were popular to sell out 10,000 seat arena's and that Spoon was a number one in Germany. Not sure Wire could equal that ; ) > the mute/emi link up must be the best bet for some sort of retro box-set / > DVD type thing. maybe when the can activity dies down the guys involved could > start work on a new project? p As much as I'd like it, I'd rather they put their efforts into R&B03 etc meself. Unless someone does it for them, retrospective DVD's can be the pension fund when the rheumatism sets in and the fingers don't work like they used to. K.
