Awesome single. I love those big ballads. The Walker Bros albums are a bit pot luck, you get a great song (and vocal performance) like The Sun..., but then you get some slight cover version popping up. But I've been playing Dusty in Memphis a bit this week, and that's a truly incredible album. > & even elvis' can't help > falling in love, not to mention possibly my favorite jd moment, > atmosphere -- but ... i dunno. I already own most of these songs on various CD singles, of course. I own the rest of the songs on either cassette tape or mp3 format. Still, I'm looking forward to having the early B-sides on CD, as this is the first time that many of them (on disc one and the first half of disc two) have never been officially available on CD before. I'll be putting some money aside for January. The album reissues with bonus tracks start next year as well, so 2004 is going to be nice for Cure fans. I actually really enjoyed it and it reminded me a lot of Wires first comeback show at the RFH. It had the same edgy, uncertain feel to it. (will they be shit? why is this a seated gig??!) Like Wire, Dexys didn't play a greatest hits set, nor did they to pander to the audience in any way. It had an uncompromising 'listen to this or fuck off' feel to it. Cool. You won't see Dexys on one of those 80s revival packages with Kim Wilde, Nik Kershaw and T'Pau (the wonderful Human League alas have mortgages to pay like anyone else so we must forgive them). Like the Wire show, the first few rows of die-hards were hanging on every word....the rest of the room were sceptical at first but gradually drawn into the whole thing and by the end well and truly sold. A slow start, as Dexys had insisted on seating in the venue (awkward bastards!), despite it being a single level hall with no fixed seating..so people reluctantly sat on the knackered old chairs they only ever put out when Howard Marks is doing his never-ending lecture tour....by song three loads of people rushed towards the stage, chairs were brushed aside and it immediately became a proper standup gig...pints/cigs in hand.....something sorely missing from the RFH.......and how much better would Wire's Barbican show have been in a proper rock venue? I'm still not a Soul Rebel, and I still think 'Don't Stand Me Down' is a little bit over-rated.....and yet Dexys were superb last night. For some reason, there was a long section where Pete Williams came on dressed as a Policeman and questioned Kevin about his 'crimes' accompanied by some groovy music and a flashing blue light...for ages!...it was brilliantly preposterous. Mr Rowland was an excellent frontman throughout, they pretty much came across as a really good band and it did not feel like a nostalgia show at all. The final encore of 'This is What She's Like' is perhaps the most thrilling climax to a live gig I have ever seen. (I have blanked from memory the appalling cover version of 'Nightshift') So to conclude, if there is another band of Wire's vintage who can still be uncompromising, challenging, rewarding and strangely 'Now'.......its Dexys Midnight bloomin' Runners. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 Nov 2003 02:56:51 -0000 From: "Tim" Subject: Re: [idealcopy] a tragedy..now Dr Who > >> > speaking of Phil Oakey...i guess you folks in the UK are aware > >> that he is > >> > supposed to be playing the next Dr. Who ! > >> > > >> > awesome > >> > > >> > RL > >> > >> Come On Robert.
