Saw these live a couple of weeks ago in Manchester. B*ll H*ck wasn't there (probably clashed with KJ at the Basingstoke Anvil). BSS were fabulous, Don't miss 'em if they come to your town. A stagefull of (5) guitarists literally bumping into each other, taking turns on lead vocals and freakouts. One of the looks a bit like Lindsey Buckingham, and they had a female singer occasionally taking the mike so We compared them to a sort of post-rock Fleetwood Mac bouncing around on an enormous Jelly. Trust me this a good thing. Hard to pin down the music, all over the place...but all good. Think Godspeed with a better sense of humour, and without dungarees. - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Andrew Walkingshaw" To: Sent: Friday, October 31, 2003 4:54 PM Subject: [idealcopy] [ot] Headsup > The new Broken Social Scene single is *really, really* good. Nothing coming up over there or over here as far as I know. Wire didn't release anything during the VHS era, so there is nothing to re-release as such (if there was I'm sure a label like Cherry Red would have done it by now as they have with The Fall, Cabaret Voltaire etc) so it would be a new thing. No doubt there are various copyright issues etc but would be great to have a DVD of The complete Rockpalast show, the promos from the Mute era, the rare TV appearances (esp. the MTV version of The Drill that was shown at the RFH with the 'interview' afterwards where Robert Gotobed is introduced as the 'agricultural expert'), maybe clips from various live shows that have been captured on tape since the 2000 reformation. Presumably the band have loads of unseen archives as well. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 1 Nov 2003 20:57:17 EST From: MarkBursa@aol.com Subject: Re: [idealcopy] this is actually about Wire... > >>No doubt there are various copyright issues etc but would be great to > have a > DVD of The complete Rockpalast show, the promos from the Mute era, the rare > TV > appearances (esp. the MTV version of The Drill that was shown at the RFH > with the 'interview' afterwards where Robert Gotobed is introduced as the > 'agricultural expert'), maybe clips from various live shows that have been > captured on tape since the 2000 reformation. WDR (the German TV station that runs Rockpalast) has licenced out gigs before - eg the Buzzcocks' Auf Wiedersehen set. Wire seem reluctant to get into releasing more archival material while they're a going concern - I'd certainly rather wait till whenever for an archive DVD rather than not have new material... though ideally if they could find a way of doing both.... Hi all, I can't understand myself why Wire wouldn't want to compile and release cleaned up archival material as a new dvd. Even as a fantastic, creative, and active now! band it makes little sense to me. I'm not saying go the route of Mark E. Smith and release everything and anything - although to his credit I do think, at least as far as the Fall's reputation among all the young local hipster musicians, bands, students and other potential cd buyers here in student town Providence - The Fall is a household name as a "cool" essential band - so the strategy of soaking the record bin with Fall cds makes them almost like a Grateful Dead of the underground scene. Sadly I cannot say the same for Wire - either your of the age to have been into them for the early masterpieces, or you maybe get wind of them via a college radio track or two, or perhaps word of mouth via a record shop clerk. #1) With Wire we're not talking a Billboard chart-topping act so dvd would be a nice format to get into large and small music shops ala Newbury comics as well as say a mammoth Virgin records - both the curious and the familiar fan would no doubt purchase the dvd. #2) I'm sure the band wouldn't mind an extra income source - this is almost always a good thing and nothing to turn a nose up at. #3) how does Wire's past efforts - which for the most part are incredible compared to so many bands that have come and gone - in any way detract from what they want to do now and in the future?? the move from the vinyl record format to the compact disc didn't change anything other than maybe add on some great bonus tracks. I also add as an alternative - to do a dvd such as Bill Nelson's latest - not really a compilation but a new work that also mixes in older material, this works really well in my opinion. Anyone able to get this proposal to the band now? - -Robert [demime 0.97c-p1 removed an attachment of type image/jpeg which had a name of Spooky .jpg] ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 1 Nov 2003 22:16:07 EST From: MarkBursa@aol.com Subject: Re: [idealcopy] this is actually about Wire... > Anyone able to get this proposal to the band now? > Don't worry Robert, we're, er, being watched ;-) Mark ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V6 #326 *******************************
