If it came from the police they were way out of line as throwing rocks/bricks is strictly forbidden for them. Somehow I can't picture the Harry Enfield's characters Stefan & Ron - dope-smoking, laid-back Amsterdam coppers who are also lovers - throwing rocks. "Hallo dere! It's me Captain Stefan Van Der Haast Gracht of the Amsterdam Police again. Viz my partner - and also, I'm very happy to say, my lover - Ronald. Obviously like in any big city, ve are having ourselves crime. Burglary was a very big problem here, but ve are proud of de way ve tackled it, because, since ve legalised burglary, dere is no longer a problem!" I might have known him. I was at art school in Stoke from 79 to 82. I remember going to a party at a flat above a derelict shop. You had to climp in through the window! All the sinks ahd buckets under them because the pipework had been disconected! I think the rent was cheap. Great party - but you had to not get too drunk in case you fell through a hole in the floor! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Oct 2003 15:17:39 +0100 From: Bart van Damme Subject: Re: [idealcopy] RE: idealcopy-digest V6 #324 >> A friend of mine who was in art school in Stoke in the early 80's,lived in >> a *really* awful flat above a shop with some fellow students. Tip for Miles: Catch these kind of chance-meetings on camera along with some cheesy music and sell them to the highest bidding network! This time not about the music but the sleeve design. It was designed by Angela Conway & Bruce Gilbert. This was his review. For Top Conceptual cover designs, Terry Jones's film canister for PIL's Metal Box takes some beating. Then again it's a headache to source and manufacture packaging materials beyond the pressing plants' stock items, and a headache to get them in the shops. For its simplicity and directness, I love this early release on Bruce Gilbert's and Graham Lewis's Dome Records - the first single by AC Marias. It was the only copy they had at the records shop I bougt it fro - it looked a bit battered to say the least - but I stumped up the cash and thought no more about it. The eureke moment came many months later when I realised that this scrumbled-up cover was in fact a designed and beuatifully printed. scrunched-up cover. By that point, I suspected that the scratches and pops on the recording were not a defect in the manufacturing - the vinyl looked fine. It's a good feeling to feel dumb and highly impressed at one and the same thing. You don't get that much, these days. So let's hear it for this long-lost gem. Angela Conway would later record "Just Talk" for Mute Records - it's another one well worth tracking down. "Drop / So"is not the sort of item I've ever seen in a secondhand shop, but if you did ever come across it, it would be great to see how it stands up to the Basic Channel test - real-time dust and scratches merging with the printed dudt and scratches. Jon Wozencroft is co-founder and resident designer of the Touch label. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Oct 2003 15:45:20 +0100 From: "Jan J Noorda" Subject: Fw: [idealcopy] for those interested..a few gigs Interesting concert by STEIM Amsterdam STEIM (the Studio for Electro-Instrumental Music) is the only independent live electronic music centre in the world that is exclusively dedicated to the performing arts. http://www.steim.org/steim/info.html The GRM Experience: Christian Fennesz, Mika Vainio and Christian Zanisi. 3 November Frascati Amsterdam and organized by STEIM. Fennesz, Vainio and Zanisi worked together in the GRM-studios, Paris for a while. GRM is well-known and very important to the developement of the Musique Concrhte. The work of many lap-top musicians can be brought back to the early experiments in the GRM-studios. For creating soundscapes with a rich pallet of short cutting-edge music pieces and optimize the performance of the music they build a huge multiple soundsystem for this called Acousmonium. This will be presented the 3rd of November. When will there be a concert at Bruce, Graham Colin or even Robert at STEIM. This could be interesting to give a concert with the biggest instrument to use, a complete studio? Jan J p.s. Who are Sunn O))). ? Sunn O))) play a couple of gigs in London Friday & Saturday Friday is at the Camden Underworld with Russell Haswell & a William Bennett DJ set (!) & Saturday is at the Julian Cope thingy. SPACE DUST! I remember having similar feelings/thoughts about both music and sleeve-design when I purchased the first DOME records. The design of the cd's don't even come close! Never cared much for the long cardboard DOME-heads... far too "Residents"! On a similar subject, anyone know who did the Duet Emmo sleeve? Not that I like it, but I can't seem to find it credited on the cd. Bart > For Top Conceptual cover designs, Terry Jones's film canister for PIL's Metal > Box takes some beating.
