The Cure double-billed with Wire was one of the great line ups and this show was one of the earliest The Cure performed. The 20" by 30" poster is the gem in a recent batch of posters from the legendary Friars Club Aylesbury which I am selling or have sold. The poster has some faint spotting consistent with age and no chips, tears, etc. It is very bright and clean ( as can be seen from the scan ). The scan is however, slightly fuzzy - unlike the actual poster. This mega poster, which it goes without saying was never commercially available, records a performance by The Cure made at a time when they had only released one single ( Killing An Arab ) and had only just released their awesome album, Three Imaginary Boys. And that's before I even get o to the genius of Wire whose 154 album of the same year remains one of the 10 great albums of all time... I wonder if it was an Autechre DJ set you saw rather than an actual live performance...might explain the cig break? I've enjoyed the couple of gigs I've seen of theirs although these have been at close quarters in a club environment. They played in the dark with their laptop screens providing the only lighting. I suppose the 'show' aspect of their performance is that both times I saw them appeared to be re-jigging tracks 'on-the-fly', and playing all new stuff so I was happy enough just to watch my heroes twiddling away and making some custom-built noise just for us. The Ulrich Schnauss gig I saw sounded as if he were miming to his own LP, maybe adding a bit of echo here and there...... ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Oct 2003 16:15:47 -0700 (PDT) From: Ari Britt Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Robert wrote... There were no "performers" or "audience" - just a few people wandering round an old warehouse, twanging bits of cable or whatever, while an ambient-ish tape played in the background. Different rules apply. As for the "live" experience, all I ask is to be somehow emotionally engaged by the performance. I centainly don't demand to be "entertained". Just keep it fresh and make it worth the time and money.
