If not then i am probably not interested..."> ANYWAY.... << This IS a golden age for animation >> here here. << - Shrek, Toy Story 1 & 2, Monsters Inc, A Bug's Life and Chicken Run are genuinely fine movies - masterpieces in the case of the first three. >> i personally prefer A Bug's Life to either of the Toy Stories. i mean, it is a retelling of Kurasawa's The Seven Samurai, only with insects. that, my friends, in an act of genius. not to say that either Toy Story is a bad movie -- both are really good. i just before the Bugs..... << And I've not even seen Finding Nemo yet >> you need to do so do so before it leaves the big screen. these movies are amazing on the big screen. Nemo is cute and fun. << - or foreign contenders Spirited Away or Belleville Rendezvous. >> not heard of Belleville Rendezvous. what is this? is it out now? << Spirited Away has had amazing reviews. 'Best animated film for year', and all that palaver. Doesn't seem to be getting much of a release though. >> ummm... it was out last year. i saw it twice in the theatre: once at an Art Cinema here in Atlanta (The Tara, over on Cheshire Bridge road), and then me and a college freind home for the holidays took her 7 year old niece to see it at an AMC Theatre. so it had a big release, back then..... i do not think it is out on DVD yet. well, maybe in Japan..... it is really good though. all of Miyazaki's films are, and a lot of them you can rent. i highly recommend My Neighbor Tortoro or Kiki's Delivery Service, if you can find them. if you can get Kiki, try and find the Disney Dub version, which features the late great Phil Hartman as the voice of Kiki's cat... those are both cute fun films. Princess Mononoke is darker, but amazingly animated. a really brilliant film. and according to the fan site, http://www.nausicaa.net/miyazaki/films/ there will be a new one next summer! << The Lord of the Rings trilogy stands as one of the great achievements of epic cinema in any age. You really are doing yourself a disservice not seeing this, Keith. >> well, Keith: on the other hand i found these movies to be tedious, and wound up losing interest halfway through both times... then again, i tried reading Tolkein's damned books and couldn't force myslef through his ponderous prose either.... so maybe i am not the best judge. my verdict on those movies: beautiful scenery, but there are too many characters to keep track of, and they are too long... It's out over here for sure and got a strictly limited art-house release It's hand-drawn as opposed to CGI and is visually stunning although the story is fairly surreal. Check Amazon.com. It's from Disney - very nice edition. Combines some of the features from the Japanese Region 2 release with some extra U.S. documentary footage. Plus - as I theorized in my review - the colors on the U.S. edition are perfect. NO RED TINT! In fact, they share disc formatting, introduction by John Lasseter (Toy Story, A Bug's Life), etc. The Kiki's disc includes a very short interview with Phil Hartmann. Disney had some sort of promotional deal on the three when they came out, but that's probably expired now. (^_^) Cheers, P-anime P.S. (^_^) > well personally i don't think it would. i've tried > it with a non anti-pirate one and it sounds fine to me. > imo it's not that "much" different. Hmm - let's examine the actual specifications. CD has ruler-flat frequency response from 2-20,000 Hz, with a signal to noise ratio of over 100 dB, and a dynamic range of 93 dB. This was taken from the specs for a very average Sony CD player - Model CDP-CE375) Cassette decks are mostly similar to this Sony: Sony Three-Head Cassette Deck TC-KE500S $ 299.95 * Frequency Response Type I, +-3 dB: 30 - 17,000 Hz Type II, +-3 dB: 30 - 18,000 Hz Type IV, +-3 dB: 30 - 19,000 Hz * Signal-to-Noise Ratio Type I, Dolby NR off: 57 dB Type II, Dolby NR off: 59 dB Type IV, Dolby NR off: 61 dB Most people don't have Three Head decks - in which case, the performance is closer to the following: Sony Dual Cassette Deck TC-WE305 $ 99.95 * Frequency Response Type I, +-3 dB: 30 - 13,000 Hz Type II, +-3 dB: 30 - 14,000 Hz Type IV, +-3 dB: 30 - 15,000 Hz * Signal-to-Noise Ratio Type I, Dolby NR off: 55 dB Type II, Dolby NR off: 57 dB Type IV, Dolby NR off: 58 dB That's a pretty pale approximation of a Compact Disc signal, to be honest. Espeically in the Signal-to-Noise ratio measurements. Remember the decibel scale is logarithmic, not linear. An increase by 10 decibels is actually 10 times louder, etc. Noise reduction will help, but except for dbx, is not across the entire audio spectrum - that's why the measurements are taken with it off. These audible differences may not be as evident on certain types of music. Electronica, industrial, Brittany Spears, etc. - anything highly processed in the studio - are designed to be reproduced on normal consumer-grade equipment. Classical or-well mic'd Jazz will generally point these differences out immediately. Or anything recorded by Steve "Analog" Albini. You mean like ALL of them?? Not particularly liking Rosselini and De Sica's neo-realism is one thing but Fellini, Visconti and Pasolini made such wonderfull classics. Can't think of a 50's "foreign" top 10 list without at least 4 Italian films myself. I must add though I like their 60's outlets better. Bart - ------------------------------- I've never got on with Fellini - too florid, vulgar and unfocussed for my taste, although I keep promising myself I should rewatch La Strada sometime to see if I like it any better now than when I saw it years ago. Pasolini didn't get going until the 60s so I didn't really consider him. I like the idea of Pasolini - the gay, Catholic Marxist angle- rather more than the reality, although the Gospel According to St Matthew and Accatone are great, unlike much of his late work. Visconti is still something of a blind-spot for me - not helped by the fact that I had tickets to see two of his films earlier this year which I gave up to go and see a certain band of our acquaintance. I actually quite like Rossellini's immediate post-war trilogy but that was all 40s (and despite Mark's attempt to stretch the decade I'm sticking to years beginning in '5'). All these directors - and later ones like Bertolucci and Rosi - are second division at best in my pantheon. None of them have a body of work - like Bergman, Godard, Rohmer and Bunuel - which stands up as great, only occasional successes. Although my knowledge of Visconti still needs work and there are one or two well thought-of works from the others - Teorema, Voyage to Italy - which I haven't seen.
