Hence for every issue with something of interest (eg Morrissey on the cover) you get one with something I just don't give a toss about (eg Dido). It is, as you say, beautifully written and nicely produced, but it lacks focus. Mark But I think Word has gone non-mainstream to some extent as it obviously has no interest in covering all the bases - i.e. interviewing those people who happen to be doing interviews this month. Its Morrissey and Costello interviews were examples of that. And it doesn't plough a particular 'this is the right music to like' furrow - it's praised everything from folk to hip hop and back again. Talking of interviews who's going to go out and stick the mike in people's faces / snort coke / get on the tour bus for us? Has anyone other than Graeme interviewed anyone? Can you have a mag without interviews? X-Ray only seems to exist to promote XFM and Bang is the new Select / Vox. I've bought the Observer for the Music monthly too which says something about my willingness to shell out for anything which might deliver what I want. On a quick skim, it may spread itself too thinly (Britney / Strokes / African music) - it's a more difficult trick to pull off than the excellent Sports monthly which has far fewer bases to cover. Another the Keith - -----Original Message----- From: MarkBursa@aol.com [mailto:MarkBursa@aol.com] >> also i see a glossymonthly music mag launched free with the observer now , lots of competition.......<< Just bought this today, but not read it yet. >>/////great idea , but hard to barge out the opposition. these things like "x-ray" and "jack" seem to fail dismally.<< Jack is a James Brown production, therefore has an unmistakeable Lad's Mag aura. Bought it once - too general to be honest. X-Ray I've passed on so far. Likewise Bang. Largely aimed at covering new acts, so you get a mag full of dull interviews like Mojo's Strokes one. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Sep 2003 16:18:10 EDT From: RLynn9@aol.com Subject: Re: [idealcopy] NME RIP In a message dated 9/22/03 2:33:03 PM Central Daylight Time, steeleknight@lineone.net writes: > On a quick skim, it may spread itself too thinly (Britney / > Strokes / African music) i really appreciate the fact that you put Britney and strokes in the same sentence.. thank you RL ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Sep 2003 22:58:03 +0100 From: "Keith Astbury" Subject: Re: [idealcopy] NME RIP > On a quick skim, it may spread itself too thinly (Britney / > Strokes / African music) - it's a more difficult trick to pull off than > the excellent Sports monthly which has far fewer bases to cover. Yeah, I like that sports mag a lot, though I've missed the last few. I find the Observer sells out very quickly that week and if you don't get to the shop early.....
