The death of Johnny Cash was the first news that I read when I woke up this morning to go to work. I felt that, after June Carter died, Johnny Cash wouldn't be that far behind, but it still feels like a punch in the stomach. I've enjoyed the music of Johnny Cash ever since I saw him guest on an episode of the Muppet Show when I was a kid. I've been driving to different audit locations around Atlanta today and listening to a college radio station that is playing nothing but Johnny Cash songs. I'll probably listen to his Murder compilation and the Essential compilation when I get home. Cash was truly one of the coolest musicians that ever walked the earth. The Man In Black will be missed. This time around, a friend and I sat in the balcony at Variety Playhouse so that we could see everything that the band was doing. Here's the setlist from what I remember: Ithica 27o9 Hunted By A Freak Ex-Cowboy Ratts Of The Capital You Don't Know Jesus I Know You Are But What Am I? Killing All The Flies Stop Coming To My House Helicon 1 2 Rights Make One Wrong Encore: Kids Will Be Skeletons Mogwai Fear Satan I was glad to hear "Ithica", "Ex Cowboy" and "Mogwai Fear Satan", as these songs were not played at the 2001 show and they are some of my favorite from the band. As is with the 2001 Mogwai show, I am glad that I took earplugs, as Mogwai tends to be somewhat damaging during their more sonically adventurous moments. It's beautiful music in an offbeat way, though. Part Chimp played an impressive opening set as well. After the show, I purchased a compilation called Rock Action Presents Vol. 1, which is a collection of songs from Mogwai's Rock Action label. There are two tracks from Kling Klang that I find most impressive; I've heard Kling Klang mentioned a few times, but these two songs are the first that I've heard from them. Also two unreleased tracks from Mogwai, two tracks from Part Chimp, and some from Cex, Zephyrs, etc. The compilation is only available at the Mogwai shows, but will probably surface for sale on the Rock Action website soon. >does anyone have the album? I have the new Mogwai album, Happy Songs For Happy People, and really enjoy it. It's probably my third favorite Mogwai effort, behind EP+2 and Young Team. The tracks are a bit shorter in length, as Mogwai wanted to keep a good pace with the instrumentals...and that's pretty much what the album is. Instrumentals with a few vocoder vocals thrown in. No banjos, Welsh vocals, or anything of the sort. Just straight out beautiful Mogwai instrumental music.
