Although it has to be said that there are some much less harsh, more thoughtful moments to break it all up, so it's a more complete, complex album than individual tracks might suggest. That's the remarkable thing...that he's not only created this insane, clashing sound, but that he's already started to refine and perfect it on his debut. >The new Aesop Rock's a bit difficult too; Ah, you see...while you're waiting for Dizzee Rascal's US release, I'm eagerly awaiting for Aesop's UK release in a couple of weeks, so thanks for the preview! That figures. For me, it's remarkable to hear someone creating records that demand (and reward) such repeated attention, for even the hip-hop that I've loved in recent years has been comparatively straightforward...or, as with Anticon, an instinctive experience. I'll be fascinated to find out where he's gone after the last album, which, as far as I'm concerned, is the finest rap record of the last decade, still capable of surprising me, moving me, amusing me, stimulating me after dozens of listens. I could spend a week in a room with "Battery" alone.... Be interested to see if they deliver as headliners in a larger hall - the live sound has been getting harder and harder (no bad thing). For me the BSP album is definietly the best debut album - it does what all good 'rock band' first albums should do - nail the live set, in the right sequence. Not picked up the Pshychedelic Furs influence - though inevitably with a band like BSP there are a lot of influences in there - everything from Pixies to the Smiths to Felt, via JD/NO. Hardly surprising that I should like them... By my reckoning it's about 40. Remember there was a core of Hanley/Scanlon/Burns that was there for about 17 years, plus only two drummers (Paul Hanley & Simon Wolstencroft) from 1980 to 97.
