Andrew the Walking Shaw asked: << Does anyone know anything about any of the following artists: Set Fire to Flames >> for some reason, Alien8 sends promos to EvilSponge (my site, see below). so i have the latest 2 CD set, but have yet to review it. it seems sort of "Godspeed lite" to my ears: same general format/instrumentation, just not as intense. anyway, there are 2 MP3 samples here: http://www.alien8recordings.com/alien39.php3 << David Grubbs >> used to be in Gastr del Sol with Jim O'Rourke. i saw him do the singer-songwriter tour thing back in .... 1997 or so. (for Atlanta listies -- he played at The Point in Lil 5. when did that close?) anyway -- very nice personable guy. his acoustic music was okay i guess. it didn't strike me as great, but he made the show fun with between song banter. never heard any of his solo albums. and i have only heard _Upgrade & Afterlife_ by Gastr del Sol, and i liked it. i don't own a copy, so can't vouch for it beyond one listen.... << Xinlisupreme >> i too have heard great things of this band. supposedly they create a loveliescrushing sort of wall of feedback. i have never seen a copy of anything by them though.... if you do find it, let me know where. PJK please don't hate me because i can't type..... - --- All the cool kids are doing it: HTTP://www.EvilSponge.org ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 9 Jul 2003 11:06:17 -0700 From: Paul Pietromonaco Subject: [idealcopy] Slow and Slow It Grows Remix Hi everyone, Quick news: This is probably common knowledge, but I was poking around Allmusic.com, and I found that the "So and Slow It Grows [The Orb in Atlas Mix] performed by Wire" is available on The Orb's "Auntie Aubrey's Excursions Beyond the Call of Duty, Pt. 1 [US]" CD. Friday July 18th sees the Clerkenwell Festival, this year featuring Robyn Hitchcock And The Heavy People, and..... The Larry Love Showband, described as an acoustic spin-off from Alabama 3. Festivities kick off about 6pm on Clerkenwell Green. The following day (19th) is the annual Respect festival, this year in the infamous Milennium Dome. The headliners this year are Public Enemy, and Gregory Isaacs is also on the bill. I may well be working there, so if any of you shriekers out there are planning to go send me a message for more info. Tim Yahoo! The four minute+ track sounds exactly like what it is: David Sylvian singing over Fennez. Probably not worthwhile if you don't like David Sylvian. Of even more interest for some of us are the 3 duets Sylvian does with Derek Bailey. In this case, it sounds as if DB came in second--and it works very well. He takes the shortish tracks into some very new places. While I'm here, Blemish is a dark set of 8 songs (4 w/ Sylvian alone--CF and DB are the only other musicians here) that examine isolation and lonliness. I bought it out of curiosity, and am genuinely surprised by just how much I like it. I recently have read that introspection is out of style, so I guess this album is out of style. Oh, well. :\ Michael Flaherty ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 9 Jul 2003 17:10:07 -0700 From: Paul Pietromonaco Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Fennez on Sylvian cd >While I'm here, Blemish is a dark set of 8 songs (4 w/ Sylvian alone--CF >and DB are the only other musicians here) that examine isolation and >lonliness. I didn't care too much for David's last CD, so I've been waiting to play this one until I had a chance to listen to it properly. Guess I'll have to give it a spin sooner rather than later.
