I'll offer: (1) Julian Swales' huge, shimmery waves of resplendent guitar -- probably my single favorite guitar sound on earth. (2) Patrick Fitzgerald's lyrics & delivery - far more emphasis on words/out-front vocals than the other bands commonly lumped under "shoegazer." I'll mostly go with (1), though I've been pleasantly surprised at how Stephen Hero's DARKNESS AND THE DAY (Fitzgerald's current project) shows how much of the KoD sound was Patrick's. There's also a two-disc KoD retrospective (I think a U.K.-only thing for now) with lots of goodies, for those so inclined. I also think KoD is a far, far better comparison for Interpol than Joy Division. I've had fun beginning and ending my Best-of-2002 comps with "NYC" - first track the song by Stephen Hero, final track the one by Interpol. later, Miles ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 8 Jul 2003 12:42:09 -0400 From: "Cambra, Robert" Subject: [idealcopy] "foetsie" That's one of the things I like about Bart, he really gets around. This is what the Camber Sands set list actually was: Pink Flag, Silk Skin Paws, Boiling Boy, He Knows, 40 Versions, Lowdown, Mercy, Advantage in Height, Another the Letter, 12XU, Drill. So the first broadcast went tracks 8, 5, 6, 3 And the 2nd broadcast went tracks 2, 9, 1, 3 Shame we didn't get He Knows instead of Boiling Boy again. And for a "punk special" why the fuck didn't they play 12XU? (rhetorical question - the children who work at R6 have no clue as to its significance, or anything at all for that matter). Before anyone asks, last night's show is archived for a week on the bbc website, in the Radio 6 section. A few nice emails to Janice Long wouldn't go amiss, thanking her for the set, and requesting it as a headline set. JL didn't seem to know about Send so that would be good reason to get it played. It'd be nice to have a complete version of one of the 2000 'retro' gigs in mixing desk quality! Don't suppose this is the right time to bring up the Garage/Chicago/Albini sets ;-) Mark ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 8 Jul 2003 22:29:30 +0100 From: "Keith Astbury" Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Brighton/hair > "All-right, boys. The Stereo Society is both polishing up the forthcoming CDs and enjoying the summer weather in New York (watching the rain come down, then cowering next to the air conditioner). This means there's nothing heroic in the update this month, but quite a few small treats gained through trawling the archives. Wire played the Bowery Ballroom in New York on Friday June 27. We have lots of memorabilia in the vaults. A bit of digging unearthed a poster from their 1979 concert at Notre Dame Hall in London - a Catholic church hall where occasional performers (who included the Sex Pistols) diverged a little from religious dogma. We offer a high-resolution version for download and pinning to the late-seventies area of your wall. To the Wire Central page: http://www.stereosociety.com/wire.html To the Notre Dame Hall poster page: http://www.stereosociety.com/wirNotreDame.html To the Words&Pictures download page: http://www.stereosociety.com/wordspic.html Sarah Jane Morris played New York's Knitting Factory Monday June 30 at 7pm to conclude a short North American tour. There's nothing extra from her, since we really piled up the pictures a couple of months ago. But she's playing out a lot this summer. Check it out. To Sarah Jane's home at the Stereo Society: http://www.stereosociety.com/sarahjanemorris.html Lots of earnest stuff has been written about the British punk era in the mid-seventies. But a lot of it was intentionally hilarious, having a good larf at the expense of the boring old farts. Being a Brit brat was all part of the fun. There was also some unintentional humor. We found a letter from a contemporary EMI artist, outraged when he learned that the company had signed the Sex Pistols. Here it is, with the signature and address blocked to protect the guilty. Perhaps we should run a competition to see who can guess its author. Again, we offer a high-resolution version for download and further forensic study. To the Sex Pistols' Stereo Society page: http://www.stereosociety.com/sexpistols.html To the mystery artist's complaint letter page: http://www.stereosociety.com/spcomplaint.html Thorne's Sprawl CD from 1999 incorporates two Marianne Faithfull compositions sung by Sarah Jane Morris. These originated in an uncompleted project in 1985/6 which halted when Marianne hit bottom and went into rehab for some months (as she details extensively in her autobiography). Sexual Terrorist was co-written with Barry Reynolds, an associate artist of the Stereo Society. Marianne herself tackled these two compositions at the time, but never released a recording. It's nice to see those old hand-written lyric sheets, once propped up on a music stand, complete with crossings-out and hamburger grease stain. Beats the modern typescript, even if they are harder to read. To the Sexual Terrorist song page: http://www.stereosociety.com/sexualterrorist.html To Marianne Faithfull's first lyric page: http://www.stereosociety.com/sexualMFlyrics1.html You can scroll through all five pages in sequence from here. Please take a creative ramble around the site. We're past 650 pages now, and there is an awful lot of what they call 'content'. It comes in often unexpected places, although as you have seen we have been steadily implementing large panels of links as standard. We continue to expand the streaming audio to illustrate the words. As I know so little about KJ (and clearly haven't learned anything from the multifarious postings on the topic) I'll refrain from quoting any of it as I don't know what would be of interest.
