Doesn't matter--it's one of the most amazing live Wire recordings I've heard! (And I've heard a lot.) RADIO WITH KXLU's BRET B THIS TUESDAY (ALONG WITH TIM ROBBINS) Big Takeover editor Jack Rabid will be a live-in-the-studio guest on Bret B's weekly punk-oriented show on well known Los Angeles college station KXLU this coming Tuesday afternoon, July 8, from 12:30 P.M. to 2 P.M Pacific Time. For all those who don't live in the L.A. area, you can still listen in to the fun on the web at www.kxlu.com (the station's live stream is easy to access from there). Interestingly, Jack will follow a similar appearance by the actor Tim Robbins, a music fan and politically conscious guy who is a devoted listener to the well-loved underground music station. (Yep, Jack hopes to give Mr. Robbins a copy of the new Big Takeover issue 52 and point out his political/economics editorial in its pages, as well.) This will be the second time Jack has been Bret's guest; the first in 2000 was sparked when L.A. friends called Jack to tell him Bret was playing Jack's old 1980-1982 punk rock band Even Worse on his show, and Jack phoned to say thanks (as recounted at the conclusion of Jack's liner notes for the new retrospective Even Worse CD, You've Ruined Everything). It was so much fun, the two agreed to do it again when Jack was back in town someday hence, and that time is this Tuesday early afternoon. The two will likely play some old records and chat about days old and new. Listen in if you like to a few knowledgeable music heads! I was very sorry to hear from Mike Watt of the passing of former Radio Tokyo owner Ethan James. Radio Tokyo was the 8-track studio where Savage Republic went to record most of the Tragic Figures album, and we later recorded the Film Noir single and the track Mobilization, for Ethan's first Radio Tokyo Tapes compilation LP, at his studio. As anyone who has any of the 3 Radio Tokyo Tapes compilation albums knows, the cream of the L.A. indie underground recorded at this humble little studio, located in a funky old house in Venice, California. Ethan was truly a warm and wonderful person to learn about the recording process with, a generous man and I feel privileged to have been able to work with him. Though I'd lost touch with him for many years, I'll always have fond memories of those days we worked with him on our music. I'll paste Mike Watt's email below, as he's got some nice things to say in his memory, and there are some links to other aspects of Ethan James' life that are interesting to know about. Bruce Licher hi everyone, ethan james was a dear friend of mine in this music world. we spent much time together at his radio tokyo studio in venice, ca during the 80s. he's the man who recorded and mixed the minutemen's "double nickels on the dime" (mixed all fortyfive songs in one night!) as well as "project: mersh" and the first side of our "buzz or howl..." eps plus our final record, "three-way tie (for last)." he also recorded and mixed the first two fIREHOSE records and all three of the dos ones. I worked w/him producing saccharine trust's "we became snakes," the treacherous jaywalkers (josh haden's first band) first album, phantom opera's first album and joey eight's (w/carla bozulich) invisible chains album. I did the crimony (me and paul roessler) single and ep w/him. I actually played w/him too for my part of the ciccone youth single where he programmed the linn drum. I worked w/him lots when it came to me and recording music (along w/my good friend spot, who did all the early minutemen recordings). he was way into jamming econo and never tried to stick me up w/a money scam (quite a rarity in this racket). ethan also had much respect for another's music and was never dominating or controlling - it was always a pleasure working w/him. he was always patient w/me and such an insightful cat - he had tons of knowledge about all kinds of things - you could never be bored spending lots of time w/ethan! I liked ethan very much and will miss him so. I have many good memories of him and they will stay w/me always. he was very inspiring. I feel I was very fortunate to meet and work w/such an individual, he instilled much confidence in me to pursue music as an endeavor and not be afraid to take chances. love to you ethan and please rest easy. mike watt here's some links on ethan: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=Bg2knikl6bbf9~C http://www.terranovaconsort.com/james.shtml http://www.rykodisc.com/Catalog/CatalogArtist_01.asp?Action=Get& Artist_ID=253 ethan was also in blue cheer under another name: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&&sql=Brv09keztjq79 here's the email I got last friday: > > > Hi everyone, > > I want to let you know that Ethan passed away > last night at 10:05 p.m. at Kaiser Permamente > hospital in San Francisco. > > Very few people knew he was ill -- Ethan > didn't want anyone to worry about him. I'd rather hear them >play >the new Heartbeat, Mercy, Two People in a Room, He Knows, The Art of >Persistance, Silk Skin Paws, Boiling Boy or Another the Letter again. i think i could live without seeing agfers or germ ship live again. i'd like to see the boys put a little more oompf into comet and art of stopping. first fast kicked every butt in the house...twice, and i still like i don't understand. it's just a great live song. so is spent, which i know a lot of you like on album, but i really don't care for it as much as other new tracks...but live...wow. read & burn rubs me the right way ;o) i would like to see some old tracks (or new ones!) thrown in once in a while. it keeps things interesting, especially when you read email on a list like this :o) i'd like to see ted milton on stage zooming with them! :o( probably aint gonna happen. last time i saw ted, the audience outnumbered blurt 4 to 3. but i'd also just like for wire to mix it up a bit more, which i have a feeling they just don't do. no requests is fine by me (except when they were here on the 15th and wouldn't oblige mine!). and no complaints fom me on being watched. they could throw that in sometime. i just wish it wasn't the same set every night. honestly, i don't know how a band can do that. back to bowery...the encores were very cool. pink flag, as i think i said, was astounding. the main set, while i enjoyed it very much, probably was a little lackluster, except for spent, first fast, and read & burn. maybe they were a bit tired after trekking across the u.s. - -paul (i'm glad i went) c.d. p.s. i think not having a merchandise table was a mistake. lots of young impressionables there www.mp3.com/winteracademy ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 04 Jul 2003 08:20:29 +0200 From: Bart van Damme Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Re: MBV > My Bloody Valentine's "We Have All The Time In The World" is a cover of the > Louis Armstrong original, which was used as the theme song for the James > Bond film, On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Does the word Footsi actually exists in the english language? Or does GL refer to the unit of rhythm in poetry called "foot"? In dutch we have "foetsie" (pronounced the same) and when something is "foetsie" it's missing, disappeared. It's also used for tampax-bins in ladies toilets.
