This cut price Ig appearance is a long way from the Basildon bank clerk look of '81! Not sure what he was thinking of - stomping about the stage like a simpleton breaking in his new shoes (did anyone else notice that near slip on the wet stage!!!) - but his "let's-try-and-work-the-(smallish)-crowd" routine definitely brought a smile to my face. Whereas, say, the SFA - who's last LP I liked a lot - were really dull IMO (apart from the doggie look!). Well, I am, and I can tell you the recent shows over there have been getting universal praise. As he has so many times before, Cale seems to have found a new reserve of energy and creativity. While his new ep (5 Tracks) is mixed for me (so far), at least it does not commit the crime of trying to recapture old glories. Michael Flaherty ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Jun 2003 17:30:13 -0500 From: Michael Flaherty Subject: [idealcopy] Wire in Chicago A bit late ... I've been away from email for a week. I expected to find lots of reviews, but finding few (and none for night two) I'll give it a try (I really don't like writing gig reviews). Wednesday: as already said here, The Double Door is a smaller club than the Metro (which I doubt they could play 2 nights--these didn't appear to be sellouts). This is unquestionably the tightest I've seen them play--it was pure, non-stop energy for the entire hour. The audience contained a good number of people who were born after Pink Flag, and they added to that energy. The set list was the usual. Nothing in the main set stood out for me that doesn't usually stand out. S. Girl was particularly manic. It was so good that I wasn't angry to find a 50$ parking ticket waiting for me after the show. thursday: I hate the Abbey Pub. For a folk dance, it's probably great, but compared to the D. D., for rock--forget it. Weak sound, a higher stage: both bands were noticably slow to gell (the opening band never did, and were cut short). But Wire being Wire came through early--by the third song Graham had fixed his sound problem (his bass had just a hum drownding out the others). A favorite moment of this set was "Spent" because Bruce went off script: he began playing his riff before Colin had changed guitars. Colin rather hurridly did so, and the others then joined in. I think he should have slowed down--let Bruce just play away. Same set (or songs anyway. I THINK they were in the same order, but I don't take notes). The crowd was appreciative but less energetic--that showed a bit in the encore, which was strong but less frantic. Seeing Wire two nights in a row was a bit strange--particularly as up until 2000 I had seen them only once (remember, they didn't tour the US in the 70s). I had "colse encounters" (as in they walked right by me) with Bruce, Robert, and Colin, but didn't talk to any of them--I find the whole "fan" thing a little awkward at this point. Mark will be glad to know that I got a really good table both nights. ;) Michael Flaherty ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Jul 2003 02:32:07 +0100 From: "Tim" Subject: RE: [idealcopy] Win Gil CD / Mg Flare Bill, quite rightly, rages against a micro-zeitgeist storm in an expresso cup: > Looks like the next Sonic Mook compilation 'Tepid Diarhea' is > going to be even > worse, hat with crappy unfunny comedy bands like Pink Grease, Mummy&Daddy > Bane Overlord, Kings Have Long Arms and Klang on it! Klang? Thats a band formed by Britpop ex-rehab/ex-elastica wastrel and pointless needle-scarred London "party animal" Donna FromElastica. Forming a sort of krautrock/nu-Camdenspazrock band and calling it "Klang" is as tired and unimaginative as forming a Beatles tribute band and calling it "Abbey Road". But its enough to get in the music papers. So wrong I agree with Bill. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Jun 2003 21:50:43 EDT From: RLynn9@aol.com Subject: [idealcopy] Wire links from Brainwashed.com WIRE SOUNDS AND VIDEOS or if that link doesn't work http://www.brainwashed.com/wire/ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Jun 2003 22:01:47 EDT From: RLynn9@aol.com Subject: [idealcopy] Dykehouse - Map Ref. 41 N 93 W has anyone listened to the sample of this on the brainwashed.com site?? go to brainwashed.com..click on the brainwashed brain...then scroll down to the "Idol Tryouts" compilation review..
