Although Free Radio culture in the Netherlands has a long history and remains innovative, popular and highly valued as an important cultural and political resource, Free Radio is neither public or commercial. Thus, under the Zerobase legislation, these stations will never be granted a legal broadcasting permit. Nowhere in Europe have legislators been so blind to active, independent radio-making culture. This needs to be changed. During its twenty-five years of existence, Dutch Free Radio has been a beacon of Dutch and international fringe cultures, alternative political action and social change. An extraordinarily diverse range of radio makers have seized the chance to express and promote their culture and present [counter]information in a way that would be impossible under the rules and regulations of the so-called ?free? market. Free Radio is an initiator of and participant in an important broad (sub)cultural coalition. Because of the ill-defined definitions of legislators, THE CONTINUING EXISTENCE OF FREE RADIO IN THE NETHERLANDS IS NOW UNDER SERIOUS THREAT. THE DUTCH FREE RADIOS NOW PROTEST AGAINST THIS SHOCKING DEVELOPMENT. WE URGENTLY DEMAND THAT THE DUTCH GOVERNMENT ACKNOWLEDGES NON-COMMERCIAL, NON-PUBLIC FREE RADIO AS A SEPERATE LEGAL RADIO CATEGORY WITHIN THE NATIONAL FREQUENCY POLICY. THAT IS TO SAY THAT LOW-COST, FREE-ACCESS DOMAINS IN THE ETHER MUST BE CREATED.? Feel free to delete if this doesn't interest you, although the content should be of interest to some IdealCopiers. (^_^) Went to see Blonde Redhead, Buffalo Daughter & King Cobra last night at the Showbox theater in Seattle. The show promptly started at 7:00 PM (tickets said doors at 6:30), so I got there early, early, early. Several friends of mine got there at 9:00 PM, and missed both opening acts! King Cobra were okay. "Siouxsie Light" for the most part - nice cover of Siouxsie's cover of Sparks' "This town isn't big enough for both of us". It was interesting how they incorporated a singing drummer into the act. Basically, she played standing up - sort of percussionist style. I'll cover Blonde Redhead next, although they were the headliners and played last. I've never heard any Blonde Redhead, so I'm not the best judge here. I enjoyed what I heard, but I have no basis for comparison of live vs. studio, etc. so I can't tell you much. Several of my friends at the show are huge Blonde Redhead fans, and they thought the show was amazing. One of my friends is their producer, though, so they may be biased. Plus - at this point - I was busy drinking myself silly (^_^). I'll probably get some of their albums - they seemed sufficiently Sonic Youth-ish to warrant further investigation. Finally Buffalo Daughter. Bufflao Daughter were, once again, amazing. Why this group isn't more popular is beyond me. They played pretty much an entirely new set - final song was the only one I recognized - "LI303VE". And, even that one was almost unrecognizable. The new material is much like the long jams on "New Rock", not the pop music of "i". Flat out rocked, too. Plus, once again, they all had coordinated outfits - this time, tie-dyed t-shirts. The keyboardist/bassist, Yumiko, was selling t-shirts after the show. I would have bought one, but they only had small left. D'oh - bring more t-shirts next time! So, I asked her some questions - which she patiently answered, even though she was probably wondering why this tall, slightly drunk, bearded guy was pestering her so much. (^_^). They're still on Emperor Norton, the new album should be done by January 2004, they're still hoping to play the ATP gig in L.A., and the new keyboard that Yumiko was playing that looked suspiciously like a new Moog Voyager from the stagefloor, was actually an original Mini Moog D. Anything else is probably lost to a pint or two of Guinness, a shot of Pernod, and jeez - I can't remember what else.
