Double Door was smaller & more intimate than the Metro. no separation between stage & crowd. Graham was out chatting with some locals in front of me at the bar. seemed very easygoing, as opposed to his intense onstage persona. The Standard opened, i had never heard them but they were just what i would have imagined. not to say bad, but a predictable 'post-rock' formula. the vocals especially, don't seem to have much variation or inspiration to them. the crowd was still small at that point, and seemed to be only half-listening. i moved up next to the stage entrance to view Wire's performance. the area in front of the stage was packed, but i couldn't tell how full the entire venue was at that point. Colin came out first to perform vocals over the 99.9 track. Graham and Bruce eventually appeared, readying their instruments. for a while it looked like Wir until Robert finally bounded up the stairs and assumed his position. setlist was probably the same as already posted from LA. there was a small hiccup during the second song, but otherwise the band seemed tight & energetic. Colin was his usual bastard self, sneering vocals and jumping around. Graham attacked his bass and his vocal turns with ferocity. Robert beat the poor drums into submission without a single extravagant gesture. Bruce tore wonderful shreds of noise from his guitar with no appearance of effort. only on Agfers did he appear to work at all -- and then only a slightly increased look of concentration really. i think it was on Spent that he ratcheted up the sound to a whole new level of guitar fury...by stepping on a pedal. all understated yet immensely powerful. as usual a few goers shouted out oldies requests which Colin or Graham bore with good humor. the first encores were great not only because i hadn't ever heard them live but the band seemed really to enjoy playing them. Colin seems to love delivering those old lyrics. at one point he thanked the crowd for its enthusiasm, but the band definitely gave back. second encore Pink Flag is their current Drill, and every time i witness it it is different, elongated, intense. this one had a long intro & outro of the band just jamming an incredibly heavy and motoring sound. Robert was spellbinding to watch -- i think he could have kept up the beat indefinitely. when it finally ended the evening had a feeling of perfect completeness -- unlike past shows i didn't hang around wanting more, i just felt satisfied. the sound from right next to the stage was great. the guitars especially sounded clearer than i remember at the Metro. overall not as loud, but also not distorted. each concert surpasses the previous one - -- may this continue! Paul you'll be glad you engaged your Amex card for this, i promise! kristoph ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Jun 2003 18:18:51 +0100 From: "Keith Astbury" Subject: Re: [idealcopy] [OT] M. + B. > > Bowie's playing arena's in November, but I'll give it a miss I think. He used the venue to the full, whereas support act Moz - the main reason why I went really - didn't really cut it. Mind you he went AWOL from the tour shortly afterwards so maybe he wasn't in the best frame of mind. But this tour - tickets are something like #36 and #46. There's much talk about how cd prices are coming down, but am I alone in thinking that gig prices are shooting up (as a result?) - certainly for the 'bigger' acts. I didn't go and see Roxy Music on their comeback tour a year or so ago cos tickets were getting on for 30 quid, yet that would almost pass as reasonable now. First of all Wire were excellent!! Started off with Colin doing his Kareoke version of 99.9 while the rest of the band ambled on and took up their positions. Main set contained all of Send. I actually got to see the band this time as American audiences don't seem to mind a guy in a wheelchair pushing his way to the front of the stage. The Great American Music Hall is comparable in size to Concorde2 in Brighton. Stage was set about two feet off the ground and no barriers between band and audience. I set myself up centre stage at the front. As I said, no surprises in the main set. In the two encores we were treated to Pink Flag, 106 Beats That, Strange and Surgeons Girl. The sound was tight and very loud. I had eardrum buzz for two days after! Must invest in some earplugs next time. Next gig I am going to will be Electric Six at the same venue. What is the deal with Bruces Guitar playing? He seems to have paired it down to almost nothing. He uses a capo most of the time and does minimal fretwork. Maybe, like me, in older age the fingers aren't as supple as when I was younger? Not that I am saying he can't play anymore!! He still sounds good but his style has changed a lot since the early days. Norm __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? SBC Yahoo! I /////i think you're partly right there keith. some recent big money signings on major labels (eg robbie williams) include big cuts for the label on gigs , merchandise etc. i guess if the kidddies are all kazaaing yr album then you milk them for the live shows instead. however , hard to believe a wily old trouper like the Dame is on that sort of deal so i suspect he's just trousering a few more millions off his fanbase. when i dared to criticise the 5th (or whatever) cd re-issue of "ziggy" as a little avaricious i got some comments from the bowie massive along the lines of "nice to see the little guys make some cash rather than the big labels for once". so maybe his fans will shell out #46 a pop without much complaint? does seem a trifle pricey but who am i to judge? p ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Jun 2003 17:41:17 EDT From: ComerWA@aol.com Subject: [idealcopy] Ovation Breadwinner dear all, i hope this is not inappropriate (as i know i've just joined the list), but i wanted to let anyone who might be interested in a white Ovation Breadwinner (Colin's choice of guitar for some time, as can be witnessed in the Rockpalast '78 video) that i have one up for auction at the moment. financial ruts drive one to do regrettable things. if this is an unacceptable form of solicitation unworthy of the list, please feel free to upbraid me (gently) -- though at the very least i think it would be of value as wire enthusiasts just to see pictures of the guitar! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2540800536&category=2384 adieu, andy p.s. i will be at the NYC wire show tomorrow night -- anyone else? ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Jun 2003 18:22:02 EDT From: MarkBursa@aol.com Subject: Re: [idealcopy] the whole Jake&Dinos aerobics thing...a thought... > >A former girlfriend of mine is a dyke. > It would be on topic if her name was Mary! Having lived in Georgia all my life, I am one of the many here that grew up on R.E.M., having first heard them in 1983 when I saw the video for "Radio Free Europe" on an Atlanta video show that emphasized Georgia bands. I naturally heard R.E.M.'s version of "Strange" long before I heard Wire's version and it admittedly took a while before I decided that I liked the Wire version better. R.E.M. does a great job of making other band's songs into their own songs and "Strange" is no exception. I'll be at the R.E.M. show here in Atlanta, having shelled out entirely too much money for fan club tickets. I wish that Wilco were opening up for the Atlanta show instead of Pete Yorn, but it should be a fine night nonetheless. Yeah, I'm a big R.E.M. fan; I'm a huge fan of their I.R.S. output, but am quite partial to a couple of the Warner Bros. albums as well (Out Of Time, New Adventures In Hi-Fi). Had this been at a seated, classical venue like the Bridgewater (our own RFH/Barbican) I wouldn't have gone. However, tonight he was playing in the Hop & Grape...small standing venue at the University that holds about 300 tops. It wasn't sold out. Kelly Osbourne was playing in the room downstairs. She was sold out, and there were pre-teenage nu-goths in dayglo pink fishnets queing around the block waiting to get in. Anyway, its great to see someone of John Cale's stature (he's a big dude..you wouldn't pick a fight with the fucker!) in a small, familiar venue, standing (swaying) with a beer in your hand. He played a great, if utterly schizoid 90 minutes which veered from an uncompromisigly fucked up free-jazz version of 'Fear is a Mans best friend', to a sprightly 'Paris 1919', moments of slick MOR, a velvets-esque one-note jam on Gun/Pablo Picasso and a beautiful solo 'Hallelujah'. One of the highlights was 'E is Missing' from the new EP, floating on a lovely sampled drone and flanged acoustic guitar. No two tracks were the same, and that 'mid-set' boredom factor you get when watching some half-assed indie bollocks or electro laptop dullard never set in. You knew you were in the prescence of a class act. And he even whipped out the Viola and obliged us with a spellbinding version of Venus in Furs! And speaking of maverick pop geniuses, I also learnt tonight that Dexy's Midnight Runners are playing in November. No not Kevin R is a dress singing Whitney...its billed as Dexys! If you can cope with Vini's famously "fragile" vocals, you'll enjoy the next couple of LPs 'LC' and 'Another Setting'. I love 'LC' which has some brilliantly skewed Hannett production and classics like 'The Missing Boy'. Or you could look for 'Valuable Passages' which compiles stuff from the first few Factory LPs and a few rarities. Later LPs add a few rather dated synth & drum machines at times, but there is something worth hearing on most DC albums. His latest 'Someone Elses Party' has had very good reviews but not heard it myself. > -----Original Message----- > From: owner-idealcopy@smoe.org [mailto:owner-idealcopy@smoe.org]On > Behalf Of Jason Rogers > Sent: 27 June 2003 01:11 > To: idealcopy@smoe.org > Subject: [idealcopy] The Durutti Column > > > After searching on and off for a few years, I finally found The Durutti > Column - The Return Of The Durutti Column in the Import section > at a Tower > Records here. Lots worth looking into here. If you really like the style "the return of..." then look for "LC", and "Lips that would kiss form prayers to broken stone" from the early catalogue, and "sex & death" and the new one "someone else's party" from more recent years. "Valuable Passages" is a real nice compilation across the various styles. Sounds great, wish I could've been there. Hearing and seeing him perform "Fear is a Mans best friend" (on telly) as a kid in the 70's forever changed the way I thought about music. He ages wonderfully too - never mind that dykey hairdo of his (he still has that?) Class act indeed! Bart ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V6 #188 *******************************
