Their gig in the Tivoli in the centre of Utrecht (to which my kid brother lives right next to) just got probably the best review EVER in the leading national newspaper De Volkskrant. Tivoli's quite a small venue next to the canal which they had booked for an entire week to rehearse the european tour. As a bonus they gave this very intimate concert which sadly was sold out immediately. Really wish I could have been there. The review stated they were in truely excellent shape, esspecially Michael, who seemed to be in total bliss the entire evening. Apparantly that whole week rehearsing they relaxed too and were having drinks in the city-centre talking to fans. Ideal. I'll go and get me a Mojo Keith, thnx for the tip... Musically it was better than I expected, but Paul himself sometimes was pretty irritating sometimes... raising his hands or guitar like he won the worldcup after each song. He seemed annoyingly aware of his status. The in-between-song-banter was a bit stale, stereotypical and reminded us all that he IS an old fart! Trying to speak Dutch is funny once or twice, but between every song?? What WAS funny was Macca grasping at his heart when the amazingly loud fireworks went of in Live & Let Die... didn't appear preconceived. In my mind I play that bit again and again ;-) Highpoints were "rockers" Back In The U.S.S.R and I Saw Her Standing There which they played Backbeat-style. I'm not a big fan of their take on Eno's Music For Airports, but, live it souded really fresh. Their own material was actually the least interesting, though still enjoyable. One being a take on the end of Strawberry Fields Forever, called I Bury Paul, which took it to a point of absurdity. Highlights would have been a piece by Tan Dun (who scored Crouching Tiger) which was really invigourating, with BOAC chanting in Mandarin ! Thier percussionist is stunning. Also a great new piece by Irish composer Donnacha Dennehy. A highlight of a different sort was when Reich's Electric Counterpoint (a favourite of mine) was performed. It was easly the best live realisation of it I'd heard. Then, about a minute or so from the end, the backing CD started skipping ! Have you allready heard any tunes from it Jan? Both Mecano and Minimal Compact are mentioned in this CLAN OF XYMOX interview. Good to hear about Mechanic Commando from Nijmegen again too. Anyone know what became of them? I still have some tapes somewhere which I used to like very much. Bart (now back to work and back to more contemporary music - NP: Calexico - Feast of Wire) ============================ http://www.clubbizarre.co.nz/deadlines/3/clanofxymoxinterview.html Excerpt: Are there any bands or artists out there who have been a major or vague influence on your musical style? Of course , too many to mention! The good thing about my study in Nijmegen ( 1980) was that I had a lot of spare time, which was quite common for social studies , so I was also active as a volunteer in Doornroosje, a venue in Nijmegen. This was a notorious place to go, downstairs it had a concert hall and upstairs was a cafe where mainly the hippies were smoking joints and sipping thea. Any band of importance in the scene played there, we had of course all German bands , representing the Deutche Welle like Einsturzende Neubauten, Sprung Aus Die Wolken, DAF, Die Krupps , Geisterfahrer, and many more. One night Einsturzende Neubauten played and showed a film during their concert of a German demonstration in Berlin where a demonstrator got hit by a public bus, dragging along the person twenty meters or so under the wheel. Seeing this scene with the haunting music of Einsturzende Neubauten a lot of people just fainted and had to be carried out. The alternative scene was thriving in the whole of the Netherlands, so naturally many British bands which were on the fore front of innovation and the Goth / Wave movement came also to Doornroosje. I remember especially Bauhaus and the Virgin Prunes making a big impression on me, because they looked visually stunning, with the Virgin Prunes making a complete theatre out of their show. It looked like genuine madness with a lot of stuff flying about on stage. With Bauhaus Peter Murphy just looked the ideal part, with white light shining under his chin and the rest of the band in fluorescent colours only exposed with the black light. Every week there was a brilliant band to be seen, like Echo and the Bunnymen, the Sound, Dance Society, The Birthday Party, with Nick Cave swinging like a monkey from left to right giving a high energetic performance, Siouxie and the Banshees, the Cure ( they played in a circus tent) and later seeing Robert Smith playing guitar with Siouxie , Theatre Of Hate, Eyeless In Gaza, Black Flag, The Comscat Angels, Sisters Of Mercy of course in the original line up, U2 , etc. All bands not jet known by the majority of people but making a big impact on everyone alternative seeing them live. Goth and New Wave was now a major alternative movement perfectly fitting the times we were living in. Also the Netherlands produced influential bands who made quite an impression on me, like Mecano from Amsterdam, Nasmak from Eindhoven , Coitus Interuptus from Utrecht , Minimal Compact etc.and 'famous' local bands from Nijmegen like Mechanic Commando and Vice . By seeing all these brilliant bands I knew there and then that I had to start something too, I wanted to make music like these bands , I wanted to be a part of things which were happening in front of my eyes...... Of course that was then and this is now so I still keep active as an organizer and get to hear all the new bands even before their release. I am still excited about the quality of music coming out and I guess that feeling won't go away. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Jun 2003 03:02:28 -0700 (PDT) From: Ari Britt Subject: [idealcopy] O.T:Glastonbury.... .........don't know if the BBC are broadcasting the glastonbury concert, but if they are what chance of someone recording the following for me?
