Paul pondered... i've got $25 burning a hole in my pocket, and i'll probably get out to the stores in the next few days. ///// ... if you like your contemporary classical, you can't go wrong with these two - Howard Skempton : Pianoworks (played by AMM's John Tilbury) A beautiful 70 minute collection of mostly very short (2-3 min) pieces. Highly recommended. I keep coming back to it. It's on Sony Classical, so should be easy to get. Olivier Messiaen : Visions de l'amen Another piano album. Two pianos. Very involving and moving music, brilliantly played, the pianos sound magnificent, the recording quality is stunning. Another one I can't stay away from. On the Montaigne label. I know what you're saying about the Manscape material but I would have liked to have seen Robert on stage; even if only as the other three wanted him i.e. playing some keyboard or something. I didn't realise what was happening at the time i.e. that Robert had already left the band. This I found out later after reading Kevin's book. At the time the press releases were all saying that Robert was still in the band but that his presence wasn't necessary given the Manscape material. This misinformation left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth as to me Wire is the four of them. (I had no problem iwth the other three making an album under the Wir name.) However, in the other three's defence they were caught short by the timing of Robert's departure; plus it appears they genuinely hoped that they would be able to talk Robert into returning. However, Robert would have no part in a Wire without drums. Reading the Robert part of Kevin's book was thoroughly depressing imo. And I suppose you could say that Robert was there in spirit having programmed the drums in the first instance. The Prats track is one of my all time faves and appears on the 1990s Pop EP. I've got a dodgy MP3 of it if anyone wants a listen. Email me off list. Be great to see some of these bands reform for a gig or two though some are obviously hindered by their members mortality or lack of it. Talking of post punk bands I'd love to see reform - I've recently discovered a Cravats website: http://www.thecravats.com If you mail the 'route to the stars' email you get the Shend. To the question of any chance of a reformed Cravats he's answered that if there was enough interest they'd do it tomorrow. Any Cravats/Very Things fans on the list you know what you have to do. Oh, and finally - any Durutti Column fans on the list might be interested in knowing that they're playing in Leicester soon with a bill that includes Ian McCulloch and lots more - details are here http://www.demontforthall.co.uk/summersundae/ Cheers John http://www.surf.to/ambition >From: "Tim ****" >To: dpbailey@worldnet.att.net >CC: idealcopy@smoe.org >Subject: Re: [idealcopy] rough trade postpunk collection >Date: Tue, 10 Jun 2003 20:37:18 +0800 > >Aren't Young Marble Giants reforming for one of these dates gig? > >be >announced in the near future...> > > >----Original Message Follows---- >From: "dan bailey" >To: "ideal copy" >Subject: [idealcopy] rough trade postpunk collection >Date: Mon, 9 Jun 2003 15:31:00 -0500 > >dunno if this has been mentioned (in any detail, at least) before ... looks >like a pretty good lineup, with all the usual suspects & a few unusual >ones, >too, not to mention quite a few current acts. might have to pick this one >up, not having heard these particular tracks by the prats, shockheaded >peters, 23 skidoo & dna, among others. > > >"Rough Trade Shops: Post Punk" is compiled by the people who work in the >Rough Trade shops. The First Letter's inside is absolute flavour-of-the-day shite, though it has an excellent cover. Not to keen on the bit soulless design of 154 too (same with The Damned's Music for Pleasure, which looks like an academic 50's Kandinski). My faves must be Chairs Missing & Manscape (which is Neville Brody's of course, as is the even better design of the Life in the Manscape single). Coppenhal's R&B's and Send too seem close to perfect.
