I think I spotted that the thing that connected most of these 'saintly people' together was the fact that their careers were heading round the U-bend at speed, or had already ceased to be entirely. It's no secret that most of the bands that featured that day enjoyed greatly improved sales thereafter, but their saintliness didn't actually extend to donating any percentage of royalties earned off the back of it to the cause. In fact, if memory serves, I think Queen and Dire Straits both declined a request to do so, which, given that 'Money for Nothing' and (I think) 'Radio Ga Ga' both sold shedloads because of Live Aid, was IMO tighter than a gnat's chuff............ You're right to say that most everyone gave them credit for their hearts being 'in the right place', but just *how big* a sacrifice is it to give up two or three hours, arriving by helicopter to play to an audience which numbers beyond your wildest narcisisstic fantasies.... Band Aid/ Live Aid was a project which doubtless had good, altruistic aims at it's heart, but I never kidded myself that *everyone* there had a single purpose. .............dw _________________________________________________________________ It's fast, it's easy and it's free. In fact, much earlier this year, I did a four-disc compilation of '85 music for some friends, and after completion of said project, have even thought of enough omitted quality tracks to do a fifth disc. I consider all of these worthy of at least an A-, four stars out of five, or whatever equals very good and above: 1) Jason and the Scorchers, Lost and Found 2) Kate Bush, Hounds of Love 3) Shriekback, Oil and Gold 4) Midnight Oil, Red Sails in the Sunset 5) X, Ain't Love Grand [minority opinion, I know] 6) The Jazz Butcher, Sex & Travel 7) Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Southern Accents 8) Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptians, Fegmania! 9) Prefab Sprout, Two Wheels Good 10) The Pogues, Rum, Sodomy, and the Lash 11) Richard Thompson, Across a Crowded Room 12) Tom Waits, Rain Dogs 13) The Cure, The Head on the Door 14) Killing Joke, Night Time 15) The Fall, This Nation's Saving Grace 16) R.E.M., Fables of the Reconstruction 17) Bryan Ferry, Boys and Girls 18) John Mellencamp, Scarecrow 19) The Hoodoo Gurus, Mars Needs Guitars 20) The Minutemen, Three-Way Tie (For Last) 21) Husker Du, Flip Your Wig 22) Husker Du, New Day Rising 23) Mekons, Fear and Whiskey 24) New Order, Low-Life To my ears, this year was so good that my #17 album, Ferry's BOYS AND GIRLS, could be the #1 album of several weaker years ('92, '98, 2000). I have PSYCHOCANDY on my '86 list because it didn't get released in the U.S. until early '86, and, well, the U.S. is where I live. And it works to PSYCHOCANDY's advantage, because it'd clock in at #25 for '85 - it gets to be my #12 album of '86 instead. later, Miles ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Jun 2003 09:58:36 +0100 From: rys01ajc@gold.ac.uk Subject: [idealcopy] Re: OT Blegvad > From: RLynn9@aol.com > Subject: [idealcopy] Off Topic...Peter Blegvad > > anyone in IC land remember Peter Blegvad? any opinions on his first 3 > lps?: > > Naked Shakespear > Knights Like These > Downtime > > Thanks, > Robert > I only know "Naked Shakespeare" well. Its a set of quirky and varied pop songs with lyrics which some might find too self-consciously knowing and clever but it has wit and good tunes and was produced by Andy Partridge. I think some of his best stuff is with Slapp Happy (with Anthony Moore and Dagmar Krause) - if you don't already know, they produced two albums in the seventies, "Sort Of" and "Casablanca Moon" plus a joint album with Henry Cow, "Desperate Straits" and a further album, "In Praise of Learning" where they were subsumed within Henry Cow. I'd recommend "Casablanca moon" as a starting point. This is also available in a "demo" version "Acnalbasac Noom" where the band are backed by members of Faust. A reformed band recorded "Ca Va" a few years ago which was surprisingly good after a 20-odd year absence and included Blegvad's "Scarred For Life", that rarity, a genuinely touching love song. I got a review copy of a Blegvad album round then, but didn't like it at all. Think that was the one. Gave it to a mad hippy bloke who used to hang round the university newspaper offices. He loved it.... Mark ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Jun 2003 21:11:36 EDT From: RLynn9@aol.com Subject: Re: CTwins [idealcopy] how many dead or alive in 1985? Not the best album of the year by a stretch, but good i guess you are not alone...my local cd/record shop stays open til 1 am on Monday nights(to sell new releases before everyone else) and there was a line (i kid you not) around the block just to get into the store to stand in line for the cd... they were playing the cd (of course) and i just didn't understand...Radiohead does nothing for me... It is funny, but I really can't say why. I look at the lineup of songs and the only ones that really stand out are end and ...deep green sea. The others with the exception of two horrible ones they are all just good ol songs. Bloodflowers is definately Disintegration part 2, but it wore on me very quickly even though I was very excited about it when it came out. It is a much much better album than Wild Mood Swings. Bought the DVD today... paulye on the subject of the Cure... i picked up Wish and Bloodflowers (i have all the albums before these) and i was quite surprised at how decent they were...especially Bloodflowers, which sounds like a definite continuation of Disintegration....... Wish is pretty good too, and i found myself not hating Friday I'm in Love as much as i used to...odd... getting old RL _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 with e-mail virus protection service: 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/virus ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V6 #171 *******************************
