I think the lps I listened to were from 1984. Too bad(?)later that year I discovered the Black Russian and the rest of the year was a blur. Of course, I made the stupid mistake of enlisting in the army towards the end of the year. (alcohol induced?) What was I thinking??? But all is well as I was never programmed. Sisters of Mercy, The Cult and probably tons of crappy pop. Saw OMD for the first time that year. Well past their prime, but still a good show. We never got anybody good in Pittsburgh. This sent me digging up my list of the year too. Don't think anyone's mentioned Kate Bush's still awesome 'Hounds of Love' which was tucked in behind 'This Nation's Saving Grace' for me, followed by Laurie Anderson's United States' (probably more because I'd actually shelled out to buy it and had seen her done it live than for any intrinsic worth), the 'Paris Texas' soundtrack and 'Low-Life'. Beyond that it's largely second-rate work by people who had done better - Cave, Scrittis, Hammill (natch), T Heads - and in the case of Sonic Youth ('Bad Moon Rising') who would do better. Pyschocandy scraped the Top 10 and I don't even like JAMC. 'Don't Stand Me Down' didn't feature as it remains the single most disappointing album I've ever heard (and despite its critical reappraisal in recent years it still sounds crap to me). Among the forgotten, C-Cat Trance and 3 Mustaphas 3 actually got a mention. What a poor year! The year of Live Aid of course. A couple of great films though - Heimat and Fanny and Alexander - with Blood Simple and Back to the Future close behind. And on TV, Edge of Darkness and Hill St, with Brookside only just over its peak.
