He he. That list was just four bands I came up with off the top of my head that I thought had released records in 1982. So I checked ye olde Guiness Book of Hit Singles/Indie Hits 1980 - 1989 and was amazed to find that I was right. I have to admit to being a bit of a Bauhaus fan in their day. Can't say that I play their records much these days if at all but they're all still there on the shelf. The OGWT performance was very ropey. Think they did Spy in the Cab too for that or I may be getting mixed up with a performance on Riverside? And don't knock Chron Gen. It's Luton's annual carnival - which for the uninitiated is allegedly the UK's largest one-day carnival - and who should we notice appearing on the sound-stage but The Beat. So with the family and some friends I wander down. Ranking Roger was the only original I recognized (Dave Wakeling certainly wasn't there) but Jeez is that man fit. He took off his shirt after a few numbers to reveal possibly the most perfect set of abs I've ever seen (admittedly I'm not usually in perfect abs company but believe me these were impressive). On backing vocals was his son Ranking Junior who is mostly in a supporting role but has a slot during Mirror in the Bathroom to show off his rapping skills. They ranged through a 45 minute set of old stuff most of which I hadn't heard in years but reminded me of how great 'I Just Can't Stop It' was. A highly enjoyable experience. Saw KaitO for the fourth time last week, but the first this year. I've banged on about them before here but I can only implore you to see them if they're playing nearby - and as they are now picking up support in the States, US listers may have more of a chance than European ones - their new album is coming out on a US label but criminally they have no UK record deal. As a live experience they are now up there with my best - - I've always been utterly in thrall. If they were a three piece I suspect they would still be really enjoyable as they have a strong bass/drums line-up and a singer/guitarist (Nikki) who is captivating. But Dave the guitarist sets them apart. A small untidy man he mostly plays guitar with a slide and a set of effects pedals, throwing himself into noisemaking and backing vocals like a dervish. Musically it's like listening to the Raincoats with a manic guitarist instead of a violin. They were supporting The Seconds (the band fronted by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs drummer) who were, frankly, pants. Details of KaitO's US tour is here: http://www.boces.demon.co.uk/tourst.htm Go see them if you can! Upcoming: Tomorrow - Jeffrey Lewis. From what I recall of the Faith tour, the support was the Carnage Visors animated film, which the Cure soundracked (rather excellently). You had to buy the cassette version of Faith to get it. They were polite on that tour. Much better on the ones either side - the Primary tour (late 80) and the Pornography tour in 82, when they were falling apart. I think I saw them twice on each of those tours, plus another odd gig to promote the Charlotte Sometimes single, which was also excellent.
