It's not the method in itself which is important but the way it relates to the time it was made. Wire are art-school innovators. If it weren't for computers, they probably would have found some other contemporary innovative method to make music. Incidentally, in Y2K, when Wire started working on R&B it was a quite new approach. I don't think it's that innovative now - it would have been real sad if the songs weren't so great but they are, mainly because, regardless of your working methods, it's your talent that really counts. Though entirely in Hebrew, Berry Sakharof's (ex-Minimal Compact guitarist) site offers a huge collection of videos, covering his career in Israel since MC broke up, including his collaboration with other MC guitarist Rami Fortis - http://berry.co.il/video.htm . The Long photo sits without its frame, propped up on a table with a ruler and a stanley knife. about 3,000 randomly selected segments have already been cut off. You exchange 75p for a dollar, and then an assistant asks you to sign a warranty and you then choose two cubes from two large drawstring bags marked 'Down' and 'Across'. The cubes are numbered and show the position of the segment you have bought. Having chosen, you write the co-ordinates down and the assistant cuts the selected segement from the photo. This is then mounted on your warranty card using a cheap glue stick. You then make your mark on a new work called 'Sold' at the same location as the segment you bought. You then sign the book and leave your e-mail address. When all the segments are sold, Drummond will go to the spot where Longs stone circle is, and bury the money in box under the circle. He'll then take a photo which will be called 'A Smell of Money Underground'. I'm not an art expert. I just enjoyed the process, and I am happy with my purchase. It will hang on my wall and give me great pleasure. When I die, my kids can sell it to a KLF fan on Ebay. It seems just as silly/sad an idea as his burning a million > quid. I liked the Million Quid burning. Better than shoving it up their noses like most rock stars. Is it sadder or sillier than The Chapman Bros. adding their marks to the Goya drawings? >I dunno, to me Drummond seems a bit of a dilettante. If you mean he is an amateur artist, then yes. I don't think he's trying to be any of those things. What are you asking him to convince you of? The whole thing was a bit ramshackle, confused and confusing. Their is no great weighty concept, there is no morality tale. There isn't an emotional element. I don't think Drummond is entirely sure what it is he is trying to do hence the ongoing debate/lecture tour thing. He had blu-tacked pages from ripped from his book to the wall, and scribbled footnotes on them. Another exhibit was leaning up against a wall in a carrier bag. Its messy and thats why I liked it. He fluffed it....like Bruce fluffed the guitar riff on 'The Lowdown' at flag:burning until the first chorus. > Richard Long's work I like enormously though! Amazing to see his art works > in nature as well as in museums. Great and timeless stuff. Shame > you didn't > get the whole work Tim. I haven't got ?20,000. Anyway its not worth having now, its been slashed up and loads of bits are missing. I know that the Dylanologist, CP Lee, has got about 8 bits because his name was before mine in the book. It boils down to personal taste. I like Richard Long too, but I get more enjoyment from Bill Drummonds work. To pick three things Bill has done: 1. Persuaded Echo and The Bunnymen tour the UK by drawing rabbits ears on a map and choosing venues along the lines 2. Burnt a Million Quid. 3.
