Bart - ---------- (* = disappointing / ** = so-so / *** = good / **** = great / ***** = classic) WIRE "Send" ****1/2 cd - 2003 - Pinkflag (PF-6) - 40'32" What with the success of Interpol, the Libertines or the Liars, it's important, as always, to 'know yer Wire'. Apart from their three crucial ****** lp's on Harvest ("Pink Flag", "Chairs Missing" and "154") and some of their ***** work on Mute (e.g. the "Snakedrill" ep, the "The Ideal Copy" album and the "Eardrum Buzz" single), the brand new work of Wire mk. III is equally important. Not only is it sonically impressive, the songs also sting like a wasp riding a bullet or a bumble bee angry after having walked a tightrope backwards (which is pretty much how Bruce Gilbert plays his guitar) and not having seen any flower to spread its wings for. Heck, any band that's seminal in the eyes of both Steve Albini and knows its Joseph Beuys is worth your while! * So how's that new album? Well, not too new, actually. "Send" reprises three of the six tracks of "Read & Burn 01" (cf. U0213, e.g. the superb, Motvrhead-gone-clever "In the art of stopping" [*****] and "Comet") and four of the six of "Read & Burn 02" (cf. U0226, e.g. the wonderfully *angry* "Spent", "Read and burn" and "The agfers of Kodack"). Because of that, there's merely FOUR new tracks on "Send", viz. "Mr Marx's table" (a minor uptempo ditty in which Colin Newman sings more melodiously), "You can't leave now" (a slow, disgusted song with a brilliant 'pathetically ominous' intro and some lovely melodic breaks), "Being watched" (a so-so track which reminds of Wire mk. II) and "Half eaten" (a funky little stormer which combines a neo-discoid bounce with sounds which remind of postpunk ` la Gang of Four and Au Pairs). All in all, I can't really recommend whether you should go for the two albumettes or this one full album. If you're a Wire fan you'll probably buy all three. If you're not, I still urge you to give "In the art of stopping" and a couple more tracks a listen! * Incidentally, go check Wire at the Barbican (London, UK), if you're able, 'cuz they'll be playing the entire "Pink Flag" album there. And do check our Wire interview in U0224, won't you? Yes this was a reference to what has gone on tonight. I'm still coming down and it's late, so a rushed overview. A (further) delayed start. The boys spread out across the large Barbican stage. Reuters is performed, pretty much as it has been recently but with an added lyric spoken by Graham in the instrumental break - difficult to make out what he says although Weapons of Mass Destruction are mentioned. A short break of a few seconds and then - Field Day for the Sundays. And then, and then... It's strange to hear any album - at least one with his many tracks - played end to end. You know exactly what's coming next and the anticipation on occasions is immense. Everything is played more or less straight - even Mr Suit, which grooved in Brighton, has been returned to its unadorned state. Except compared to the original these are angrier, louder versions - and in the case of Mr Suit and Surgeon's Girl, faster. The speed of the latter is unbelievable and it's one of the great highlights of the set for me. There's great amusement value throughout as well in hearing some of these songs played live - The Commercial, Field Day, Brazil and the other sub-minute songs are not a normal live experience anymore, if they ever were. The band are on song tonight - only during The Commercial is there evidence of chord confusion. Other particular standouts for me are Pink Flag, Ex Lion Tamer, Fragile (something of an oasis), Mannequin (which just sounds like a classic song by anyone's standards - sing-along-a-Wire) and Strange which churns like a caged beast. And what of the Chapmans? Here's where Andrew's hint comes in. Throughout the set a huge screen projects stock footage of fit looking people doing step-aerobics, probably from an American video (some of the footage is shot by the ocean). And that appears to be it - no blood and gore, no stage sets. I quickly tuned it out to watch the band. At the end of 12XU the band strangely don't leave the set - surely they're not going to play Dot Dash for the CD generation? Then a huge flash from lights surrounding the screen and seven fit people bounce on dressed in pink aerobics gear and carrying their own step and proceed to emulate the screen people, grinning inanely, while Wire play the re-interpreted version of Pink Flag familiar from last year's gigs. It's simultaneously funny and arty in a pure Wire way and almost makes the boredom of the screen imagery worthwhile. An announcement that there will be a 40 minute break. In the foyer some DJs are reinterpreting Wire songs in a very interesting way but I use it as background noise while I chat to some of the huge number of people I know here. Back in the venue and four large Perspex boxes have been set up and one can make out a band member inside each one. The lights dim and heart monitor -type waves and numbers (pulse rates?) are projected on the front of the boxes. Each is dark but Colin's is then illuminated as the band lay into a stunning version of 99.9. I've been relatively lukewarm about this song up to now but this is stunning. For the next song, Colin's mouth is projected in close-up singing the words. Later we see Graham's right eye, Bruce's left eye (greyer eyebrow than Graham) and Robert's nose in close-up. The projection and band visibility is different for each song. Despite the fact that they can't see each other the band is tight, right on the nose. The impact of the boxes is startlingly effective to my mind - Es Devlin succeeding where the Chapmans hadn't. And the noise - power flowing off the stage. Spent is staggering, I Don't Understand and Agfers (Graham's voice lost in the mix) only slightly less so. Bruce takes to squatting by his amp. Robert is astonishing - the muscles on his arms standing out like ropes. He looks fitter than any of the step-aerobic people. Colin is animated - - he'd done some non-guitar singing during Pink Flag and this has encouraged movement. He's sweating heavily in his box - it must be hot in there. Is Graham slightly more subdued than normal? He's furthest away from me so perhaps not. One thing tonight (and this incarnation) lacks is Lewis singing. Oddly, not all of Send is done - the set is all R&B material, none of the new songs. They end abruptly and the lights come up. Have they been curfewed? A sound of Velcro ripping and they exit their boxes. No amount of clapping will bring them back. All in all I thought this was a great night. The band are in top shape, Pink Flag was a joy and if you're going to put something on in a big concert hall at least give the punters something to look at and think about. Afterwards not everyone agrees - this performance is going to provoke some interesting debate in the next few days. Good to meet so many ICers, some again, some for the first time. And there were doubtless some I missed. Goodnight - over to others for more considered comment. Please delete now if not interested. (^_^) Hi everyone, I was visiting my local independent record store this afternoon, and I found something cool. No - not a copy of Send. Mine hasn't arrived in the mail from posteverything.com yet, anyway! Nope - it was a sealed "new" copy of Tim Buckley's Blue Afternoon. This album is long out of print, apparently due to licensing issues. However, according to http://www.timbuckley.com , Straight records has re-released the album on vinyl. There's a catch though: "Unfortunately the entire pressing was warped so buy at your own risk!". My guess is probably that these records were a defective batch pressed in the mid-70's, and stored in a warehouse somewhere. Straight decided to cut through the red tape that surrounds this title, and release what they had pressed back in the day. It definitely sounds like 70's vinyl - slightly noisy compared to today's quiet formulations. Still - it's very awesome to be able to hear this record in something approaching fidelity. (Before this, the best copy I had was a scratchy 1969 used vinyl copy. And, I was very glad to have that!) And - yes - it is warped. However, the warp is very mild. It's a bowl warp - which is the best warp to have if you're gonna have a warped record. It's been a long time, but if I remember correctly, bowl warps were caused by incorrect cooling of the vinyl after pressing - possibly due to overheating of the stamper - and show up audibly as a slight channel imbalance. Again, it's been a long time, but I think the other type of warp is called a wave warp. Those are pretty nasty, causing your stylus to have incomplete contact with the groove, and sometimes leave the groove altogether! So - if you can still play vinyl, have an interest in Tim Buckley, and are willing to take a slight risk, you might find that this edition of Blue Afternoon is worth investigating. Other shops should carry this disc, but quantities are limited, I'm sure. (^_^) Cheers, Paul ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V6 #119 *******************************
