The list is what it is, and one of those things is a place for Wire fans to congregate. Personally I'm glad to see so many fans getting together in person (having figured out from the 2000 RFH "meeting" debacle that just meeting at the bar at the venue is hopeless!), and since the list is heavily UK-oriented, an "event" show like this one is going to create a lot of traffic. I have no objection to coordination of plans on the list. I'll manually uns*bscribe you. Apart from their three crucial ****** lp's on Harvest ("Pink Flag", "Chairs Missing" and "154") and some of their ***** work on Mute (e.g. the "Snakedrill" ep, the "The Ideal Copy" album and the "Eardrum Buzz" single), the brand new work of Wire mk. III is equally important. Not only is it sonically impressive, the songs also sting like a wasp riding a bullet or a bumble bee angry after having walked a tightrope backwards (which is pretty much how Bruce Gilbert plays his guitar) and not having seen any flower to spread its wings for. Heck, any band that's seminal in the eyes of both Steve Albini and knows its Joseph Beuys is worth your while! * So how's that new album? Well, not too new, actually. "Send" reprises three of the six tracks of "Read & Burn 01" (cf. U0213, e.g. the superb, Motvrhead-gone-clever "In the art of stopping" [*****] and "Comet") and four of the six of "Read & Burn 02" (cf. U0226, e.g. the wonderfully *angry* "Spent", "Read and burn" and "The agfers of Kodack"). Because of that, there's merely FOUR new tracks on "Send", viz. "Mr Marx's table" (a minor uptempo ditty in which Colin Newman sings more melodiously), "You can't leave now" (a slow, disgusted song with a brilliant 'pathetically ominous' intro and some lovely melodic breaks), "Being watched" (a so-so track which reminds of Wire mk. II) and "Half eaten" (a funky little stormer which combines a neo-discoid bounce with sounds which remind of postpunk ` la Gang of Four and Au Pairs). All in all, I can't really recommend whether you should go for the two albumettes or this one full album. If you're a Wire fan you'll probably buy all three. If you're not, I still urge you to give "In the art of stopping" and a couple more tracks a listen! * Incidentally, go check Wire at the Barbican (London, UK), if you're able, 'cuz they'll be playing the entire "Pink Flag" album there. And do check our Wire interview in U0224, won't you? But Paul, Tower is the most ridiculously overpriced music chain store in the U.S. For instance, they want to sell the XTC ltd. ed. reissues for $35 each, when I bought them all from hmv.com for what amounted to $13-$14 U.S. Unless they have an item on sale, Tower is always the highest-priced option here in Nashville, and for that matter everywhere else I've visited one. That being said, I haven't seen the DIRTY reissue selling for less than $24 -- i.e., priced like a normal two-disc set. Which in a sense it is, I guess. Maybe Elvis Costello moves more units and can thus go for $17 per two-disc reissue, but I have no idea what the relative difference between Costello reissue numbers and Sonic Youth reissue numbers would be. Also, we are talking two different labels (Rhino vs. Interscope/Geffen), so they may have different ideas about margins. BTW, I do plan to buy the Sonic Youth reissues, but I'm just fine with the earlier Ryko reissues of Costello, and am not enough of a completist with Costello to want to pay again for the bonus bonus tracks on the Rhino editions. Also, no plans to supplant my Ryko Bowies with the re-remasters. later, Miles ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Apr 2003 13:06:58 -0500 From: Miles Goosens Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Re: me off At 10:33 AM 4/25/2003 -0700, Paul Pietromonaco wrote: >> I used to really dislike the Fall until 1998, when one day it dawned on >me >> that I would now like them. > >Miles - I have to tell you - that's the best reason I've heard for liking a >band. Here, they're sorta price competitive, if you know their tricks - i.e. never buy from Tower unless it's on sale. (^_^) Most everything in Tower is always on sale - they make their money from the people who don't buy the sale items. In fact, I've noticed the small local stores usually match Seattle's Tower sale prices, and try to undercut them a little if possible. When the Tower sales end, the local stores stop their sales too. (^_^) So, Dirty is $31.99 list at Tower. But, there's no current Universal sale right now. The list price according to Amazon is $29.99. The $31.99 is about right for a Tower non-sale price. I'm guessing when the Universal/Interscope/etc. sale comes, it will be roughly equivalent to Amazon's discount price - $26.99. > That being said, I haven't seen the DIRTY reissue selling for less than $24 -- i.e., priced like a > normal two-disc set. Which in a sense it is, I guess. Yeah - I see your point, but I just can't consider it a two-disc set. It's a single disc, with a bonus disc of rarities, in my opinion, and should be priced accordingly. I would say the Rhino reissues have the right price point. It seems like all of these Universal "Deluxe Editions" are overpriced, considering what you're getting. I'll confess - the only one of these "Deluxe Editions" I've actually purchased is the Who's "Live At Leeds" because I felt that disc could be considered a two-disc set. The second disc is the rest of the concert they could never release because it was a single album/CD. That seems reasonable to me. And, I'm sure I bought it on sale - although I can't remember what I paid for it right now. (^_^) I don't think Elvis Costello moves more units, per se. I think that Rhino is hoping that the low price point will make people more apt to pick up a CD they already own. You'd think that Universal would try for that too, but they seem to be trying to create a higher price point for a "Deluxe Edition". Jeez - if they're gonna do that, I want a DVD with 5.1 mixes in there! (^_^) Okay, okay - Miles, I'll quit grousing. (^_^) I'll probably buy the deluxe edition of Dirty eventually.
